REMARKABLE Antique French hand painted tapestry pelmet! ~ What an incredible find ~*~ This textile once hung in a chateau in central France.  It is an ENORMOUS textile ( I giggled when I saw the photographs as it makes the chair look like a miniature!! )~*~ , This textile is all hand painted with  the most wonderful  floral designs. This textile dates 1850-1870 and is so very very rare ~ The fabric on this textile is a very heavy woven pure linen weft and a natural cotton warp, plain weave. The hand painted designs are GORGEOUS. Lovely floral designs on each side of the pelmet with gorgeous foliage. The central panel is a beautiful blooming floral design, all hand painted. The trim is extraordinary and decorates each side and bottom of the scallops. The trim is a wool trim, handmade. The bottom of the pelmet is a stunning earthy red tone, and again all hand painted. This textile is backed in a brown satinised cotton. This textile has a combination of both hand and machine stitching. (I was lucky enough to find one curtain panel that belonged to this set, please see my other textiles! ~*~ ) There is a layer of cotton canvas between the painted linen fabric and the satinized cotton backing.  Along the top of this pelmet one can see the original nail holes with rust surrounding the holes, this would have been nailed to the side of a wall~ it would make a beautiful wall hanging or perfect for any textile collection~*~ A gorgeous and rare textile~

This textile measures : 152 inches wide by 58 inch drop at the widest point of the pelmet. The fringe trim measures 4.5 inches long ~

CONDITION: This textile is in original unwashed condition. There are water marks on this textile ( please see photographs) and one can see that this textile was was hung with a gather near the middle as there are lines near the central panel that are paler than the body of the textile. The backing has many tears and is not in good condition so can either be left as is , or restored and repaired. One can see that the original design at the top would have been a decorative edging as there are traces where the textile would have been cut, however it is a straight edge at the top~*~ The linen canvas front fabric is in really wonderful condition, no tearing, some marks and some small spots of damage at the top, but still very strong. This textile is more than worth having cleaned and restored properly as it is a wonderful and rare find. There are some small areas of damage to the trim, but generally stunning condition for its age. Please email me should you need a more detailed report of the condition or would like further photographs~*~

Please email me if condition is vital to your purchase and we can discuss condition in detail. When describing my textiles, I use my best judgment, knowledge and experience to estimate their age. I have had many years of research and hands on experience with these wonderful textiles. I describe items as Antique if I estimate the age to be 100 years of age or greater. EBay currently define an antique as dating to 1930 or earlier. I describe items as Vintage, as per the dictionary definition, if I feel the textile has age, or is outdated or old-fashioned, dating from the past. If I use both Antique/Vintage when describing a textile, it is because I feel the textile is most likely 100 years of age or greater, but may fall just short of that date. I often work in collaboration with other colleagues and textile specialists to ascertain the approximate age of my textiles, however ultimately any statement of age is a matter of best judgment only~*~I also use my best professional judgment to ascertain the fiber content of my textiles, using sight and feel and where possible historical information and context to help me to identify plants used in a particular era. However, because my textiles are old, any statement of fiber content is again always only my best professional assessment. ~*~ I feel privileged and honored to bring these textiles to you, I sincerely thank you for your interest ~*~
