 TITANIC OLYMPIC WHITE STAR OCEAN LINERS LINE SHIPS
 
Presented for auction is Ocean Liners of the Past, Number 1 in a Series of Reprints from The Shipbuilder:  The White Star Triple Screw Atlantic Liners - Olympic and Titanic, Arco Publishing Company, New York, 1970.

This book is almost entirely a facsimile reprint, produced by arrangement with Benn Brothers (Marine Publications) Limited, the present publishers of The Shipbuilder, from a Souvenir Number of that journal originally published in the summer of 1911. This souvenir edition was the most lavish and the largest produced until then in the history of The Shipbuilder. Because of the highly detailed coverage it gave to the ships themselves,  their fittings, design and building, the original edition has long been a much sought after book among shipping enthusiasts.
This special number was published to commemorate the building of these two mammoth White Star Liners which were intended to put the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company in the forefront of the prestigious Transatlantic passenger trade. These two great ships represent the zenith of British shipbuilding achievement, at a  period when Britain literally "ruled the waves" in every sense, with the largest merchant and naval fleet in the world.

Titanic and Olympic were virtually floating microcosms of Edwardian Britain, embodying every technical and technological advance then known, superbly built with no expense spared in one of Britain's greatest shipyards, and preserving for passengers and crew the rigid social class distinctions which reached their extremes in Britain just before the First World War.  In short, these two superb ships were symbols of Britain's dominating position at the center of world commerce and prosperity.  Perhaps symbolically for Britain, the Titanic was still on the stocks and Olympic was the centre of attention when this special Souvenir Number appeared, as is reflected in the pages of this book.

Apart from the original Souvenir Number, however, this present book also includes three important extracts from later editions of The Shipbuilder which are particularly relevant to the subject. The first covers the alterations and modifications to the original design, mostly made from experience gained with the Olympic. The second concerns the sinking of the Titanic, while the third contains summaries of the report on the Titanic enquiry, the report of the Merchant Shipping Advisory Committee and the Board of Trade's new rules for life-saving appliances.  Lastly there is an Epilogue written specially for this book, giving details of Olympic's subsequent career until she was scrapped in 1937, and which includes many additional illustrations.

At 41 years old! the book and dust jacket are in Near Fine/Good Plus condition. (Please see photos below).  Small black line on back board otherwise just about pristine.  Dust Jacket has some age toning, especially to spine, some splitting to the outer clear covering along the back of the spine, some raggedness and a couple small chips to top and bottom edges.  The book measures 10"  X  7 1/2" and has 164 pages plus ads.

A scarce and pricey book -  here is a chance to get a very nice copy for much much less!
