Matchlessantiques offers collectors, farriers and smiths this solid wrought 140 lb. TRENTON Farrier's anvil. This anvil is marked with the trade mark "TRENTON" and the front foot is marked "140" for 140 lbs. and the serial number "16577" which means this anvil was made in 1900. This anvil still has a good rebound. There are two grooves in the face of the anvil measuring 5/8" and 1/2" wide which may have been used in the horseshoe making process. Pictures say a thousand words, so please, take a close look.

Trenton anvils were made by The Columbus Forge & Iron Company of Columbus, Ohio. They began production in the U.S. in 1898 and continued forging anvils until 1953. Trenton anvils were made of solid wrought iron with a cast steel base. They were faced with a Swedish Tool Steel plate when available. The company advertised their anvils to have a superior shape, perfectly ground faces, straight holes, long pointed horns, long hard faces and tails, tempered edges to prevent chipping and a good clear ring. Information credited to Richard Postman's book, Anvils In America. Signed copies of this interesting and informative book are available. Please write if you are interested in purchasing your own copy.

Trenton's farrier's anvil line, like most farrier anvils, were longer and thinner than their regular line of blacksmith anvils. The horn is longer and wider than a General Blacksmith Pattern, and there is no table at the back of the horn, only a clip horn for turning shoes. At the heel of the anvil, there are two pritchel holes so the farrier can punch two nail holes without moving the shoe.

NOTE: This auction is for the 140 lb. Trenton ANVIL ONLY. The cart and other anvils are NOT INCLUDED in this auction. Please check other listings or write to check item availability.

This anvil has an excellent rebound and ring. Measurements are: overall length 27 1/4", face 3 1/2" x 16 1/4", horn 11", hardy hole 1", pritchel holes both 1/2", height 10", base 9 3/8" X 11 3/8", weight 137 lbs. Lower 48 states s/h/i is $70.00
