In a secluded studio in Red Cross, Pa., a perfumer is hand-blending true essences--the urbane, the agrarian, the culinary--using an advanced system called "Headspace Technology." To get a specific scent, first the air around the material must be analyzed to identify its source. Then the molecules are broken down and extracted. Though the science is complex, the result is not. Only naturally occurring ingredients and botanical derivatives are used, so the fragrance doesn't stain clothes or, apparently, disturb sinuses."
