DESCRIPTION

What I have here to view is a Model 951 Vintage Circa 1940's Rolex Tudor Automatic Stainless Steel oyster watch in excellent condition. This watch is rare enough to be in James Dowling's book " Rolex Watch's, The Best Of Time " in the chapter under odditie's. This is the same #951 model, only this watch is in completly original condition with the same 17 ruby automatic Harwood style bumper movement and a very nice completely original factory dial. This is a very difficult Rolex watch to find, particulary in this condition. See the bottom of this description for more on this first automatic watch.

WATCH  DETAILS AND PICTURES

DIAL:
The dial is signed Tudor Automatic Oyster Shock Resisting and Swiss Made at the bottom. The early Tudor Rose ( in a shield ) logo is below the 12 o'clock position. The dial features appled raised gold arabic and alternating diamond shaped hour indexs with a sweep seconds track that is calibrated into 5ths of a second for precise calculations. This is an off white or light champayne colored dial with a even patination from age and is quite nice and is 100% completely original including the gilt shaped hands. The crystal is perfect.



CASE:
The fully signed and numbered stainless steel Rolex Tudor oyster case has the original early signed Rolex oyster screw down crown that screws down properly. The signed Rolex Tudor oyster casecback is also fully signed and numbered and screws in properly with no damaged threads. This model 951 case is showing minimal signs of wear consistant with age and is in excellent condition. A leather strap in excellent condition is attached.


MOVEMENT:
The 17 ruby bumper automatic movement is running strong, is high grade, is clean and is accurate. This movement is very scarce in a Rolex and is completely original.


This is a rare fully signed 1st generation Rolex Tudor Automatic factory original watch in excellent condition that is ready to wear or join a collection.
How the first automatic watch worked.
The first automatic mens watch had a small weight that was placed inside the watch. The weight inside the watch would swing back and forth and as the weight swung, it would hit a small gear that would then wind the watch. The weight did not make a full 360 degree rotation, only roughly 180 degrees because of the spring bumpers that were restricting it from a full rotational swing. These small spring bumpers made it so the weight swung in a back and forth motion, like a see - saw. This type of a self - winding small machine is now called a hammer or bumper. This is from John Harwoods description who is the man who pioneered the first automatic wristwatch and is the same movement Rolex used in this first Tudor automatic watch.
