Kalanchoe tubiflora quite facinating both in appearance and behavior and tend to appeal to those with an eye for the unual and peculiar.  Maternity plant produces a thick central stem, up to 3 feet in height by maturity, covered in opposite, tube-shaped, waxy leaves.  Leaf color intensity and leaf size/shape are proportional to the amount of light and water the plant receives.  As the growing season progresses, plants produce many small flower-like 'plantlets' at the leaf tips which fall off and quickly develop shallow roots; growing just about anywhere, with or without soil.  Fortunately they are are not difficult to remove, but they can become a nuisance if not kept in check.  Due to the plants ability to reproduce vegtetatively, flowering is quite rare, but can be achieved with consistent feeding, full sun exposure in summer, and a reduction of light hours in fall.  If successful, plants will reward you with up to five weeks of beautiful, bell-shaped, salmon to red blooms that hang in loose clusters from the top of the plant.  Requires sharp drainage, infrequent watering and dryish soil for success.  This Madagascar native succulent is extremely resilient and requires absolutely no care for success once established.   Due to the plants popularity and ease of culture, it was able to naturalize to the point of being listed as an invasive species in eastern Australia and many Pacific Islands and it is strongly advised to use care and avoid direct planting where optimum growing conditions exist.
