Duncan Grant (British 1885-1978)

One of the central figures of the Bloomsbury Group along with the influential art critic Roger Fry and Virginia Wolf, Scottish born artist Duncan Grant was a designer as well as a painter.
The son of a military officer, Grant frequently visited Paris before the war where he met Matisse and made several visits to Picasso’s studio. Following the first Post-Impressionist Exhibition mounted in London in1910, Grant became one of the first English artists to assimilate the influence of Paul Cézanne and the Fauves and exhibited to the second show two years later. In 1919 Grant joined the London Group and during the years between the wars he represented three times Great Britain at the Venice Biennale. Grant’s work is present in many public collections including the Tate Gallery, London, which staged a retrospective exhibition in 1959 with subsequent Arts Council tour.
