A fantastic find for the maritime and nautical collector is this unique personalized powder horn handcrafted by Newfoundland whaler Abraham Mercer dated March 29, 1876.  This is a marvelous piece of folk art depicting an array of fanciful free-hand drawings including mermaids, palm trees, whaling ship, compass, fish, women, and a cat. One can only speculate at these as part chronicle of his travels and part whimsical imaginings stemming from long months at sea.  Newfoundlanders began whaling in the late 16th Century, and they were considered among the finest whalers in the world.  Abraham Mercer was born in Conception Bay, Newfoundland in 1849; his family still lives there.  This powder horn measures about 17" long and is about 3" in diameter at the bottom wooden stop. It is in excellent condition for its age, as it appears to have been well cared for. It shows beautiful coloration and rich patina that highlight the intricate and detailed drawings. Please consider the photographs carefully, as they hopefully enhance the description.
