A JOURNAL OF AFRICAN AND AFRO-AMERICAN LITERATURE Illustrated with photographs and figures in the text. Black Orpheus was was a groundbreaking journal of African and Afro-American literature founded in 1957 by Ulli Beier and Janheinz Jahn, and published by the General Publications Section of the Ministry of Education in Western Nigeria, and later by the Mbari-Club. Black Orpheus was the first literary journal of black Africa to appear on African soil. Black Orpheus published poetry, art, fiction, literary criticism and commentary, and took inspiration from older African artistic and literary traditions. Other contributors and editors, including Léopold Senghor, Camara Laye, Andrew Salkey and Léon Damas, reflected its Pan-African reach and ability to attract writers of distinction. It was, and still is, a vehicle for the expression of all forms of African literature and art. This is the scarce #1 issue of Black Orpheus, the First Edition published by The Ministry of Education, Ibadan, Nigeria, 1957. |

I am a bookseller based in the South West of England. I have over ten years experience of operating on eBay, and post items to every corner of the globe, without exception. Once you have paid for your book it will be despatched to you on the next available posting day. My aim is to get your book to you promptly and above all safely, without damage. Books are firstly wrapped in strong protective bubble wrap The postage charge I quote always reflects the genuine cost of posting & packaging the book. The heavier the book, the higher the charge. I usually quote prices for the standard service available, i.e. Second Class / Standard Parcel for the UK, Airmail for the Rest of the World. I can offer other services such as Recorded & Insured deliveries, and usually do so as a matter of course for books of higher value. Please e-mail me if you have any special postage requirements and I will do my best to accomodate your needs. Bidders Please Note: If you are the winning bidder for more than one of my auctions combined shipping is available . I will re-calculate shipping costs so please wait for your invoice so that you can receive the discount. Payment My preferred method of payment is Paypal, and Paypal is the only method of payment I will accept from buyers who are not resident in the United Kingdom (i.e. not resident in England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland). From UK buyers only I will also accept Personal Cheques and Postal Orders. If paying by either of these methods your package will take a little longer to reach you as it will be despatched only when funds clear. |

Returns Policy
I aim to make my listings as clear as possible, with comprehensive condition descriptions and clear photographs. If anything in my condition ratings I will tend to down rate a book rather than run the risk of being misleading. However I do accept that, on the rare occasion, a customer will not be satisfied for whatever reason and will want to return a book for a refund. I am happy to accept returns, within the reasonable conditions stated below. I am always happy to communicate with customers to resolve any problem, so please do not hesitate to contact me for clarification on any point, or to resolve any issue. |

Definitions of the Condition of a Book
Aa a reputable online book seller, I use the Independent Online Bookseller's Association guidelines on how to describe a book's condition. Below is an explanation of each rating. MINT (M): Without faults or defects, unread, in the same immaculate condition in which it was published (Note: very few 'new' books qualify for this grade, as many times there will be rubs/scuffs to the dustjackets from shipping, or bumped lower spine ends/corners from shelving). FINE (F): Approaches the above, but not crisp. May have been carefully read and dustjacket may have been slightly rubbed or spine ends slightly bumped from shelving/shipping, but no real defects or faults. (NOTE: From here on, there may be '+' and '-' in a grade, which will mean that it is above the grade noted but not quite to the next higher grade for '+', and that it is below the grade noted but not quite to the next lower grade for '-'. NEAR FINE: A book or dustjacket approaching FINE but with a couple of very minor defects or faults. VERY GOOD: A used book showing some small signs of wear on either binding or dustjacket. Any defects/faults must be noted. GOOD: The average used and worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects must be noted. FAIR: A worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title page, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, dustjacket, etc. may also be worn. All defects/faults must be noted. POOR / READING COPY: A book that is sufficiently worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted, and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc. EX-LIBRARY: Will always be designated as such no matter what the condition of the book. BOOK CLUB: Will always be noted as such no matter what the condition of the book. BINDING COPY: A book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or non-existent. Always, if issued with one, the lack of a dustjacket or slipcase will be noted. |
