It’s hard to imagine an Air Max that flew under the radar, but the Air Max 96 fits the bill. As the follow up to one of the most revolutionary and iconic designs of all time in the Air Max 95, the 96 was always going to have an uphill climb ahead of it.

For its 20th anniversary, Nike has pulled the 96 off of the archive shelves. The original sole has been switched out for a streamlined Air Max 95 ultra design, but the rest of this unearthed gem remains unchanged. A combination leather/mesh construction features an inlaid sawtooth design that encompasses a majority of the upper, a classic mid-90s design that features the Nike swoosh in a supporting role on the toe, heel, and tongue.

There’s no denying that the Air Max 96 was underappreciated, to the point where some basic overviews of the Air Max line skip from the 95 to the 97. On the other hand, 1996 was the year that the Macarena became a national phenomenon. So are you really going to take their word for it on everything?
