What is Notgeld?

In short, Notgeld translated from German to English means "Emergency Money". 

These were issued during the inflationary period (1914-1924)

During and after the First World War physical money was severely scarce. Metals used in the production of regular currency were being put toward the war effort or either paying off debts. To alleviate the lack of available currency, cities towns and states began to issue their own currencies, resulting in what we now categorize as notgeld. Various themes such as politics, local history, nationalism and art are portrayed making Notgeld a very unique period in the history of currency.
