It also means that there is always something for everyone, whether you like small and subtle, big and blowsy, bright and cheerful or plants with more subdued qualities.

In orchids there is always something for everyone,

Please read on for more information about this beautiful orchid
,

If you are a little unfamiliar with orchid culture Just remember, orchids are mainly very tolerant plants that don't usually just die. They usually are killed, either by disease, unfavourable conditions or by human beings being over attentive.

Rarely do they succumb to neglect unless it is total neglect. ,

The Paphiopedilum or Lady's Slipper is by far one of the most unique and intriguing of all orchids. Its exotic, wax-like, richly coloured blooms last for weeks and sometimes months. Lady's Slippers have no pseudobulbs but feature attractive, glossy leaves. After leaves are fully formed, the flower stem rises from the centre of the new growth to form one of the most unusual flowers in the world.

Best of all, they are ideal for home growing.

This large flowered Slipper Orchid grows and flowers well in the home. The huge waxy blooms are displayed, one to each stem, well above the green foliage. These flowers are very long lasting, often staying in good condition for up to twelve weeks.

These plants are hybrids that are grown from seed so colour may vary a little from plant to plant.

Paphiopedilum lowii  ,
is a species of orchid endemic to western and central Malaysia.

Cultivation,

How To Grow Slipper Orchids,

Grow and flower your Slipper Orchids (Paphiopedilum Orchids / Paphs, Phragmipediums,  Phrags, Successfully by following these simple tips.
How to grow Slipper Orchids in summary.

Use the smallest pots which the roots will fit in and position in bright light but no sun.
Lady's-slippers or Paphiopedilum grow best in bark media like Orchid mix. The air humidity should be more than 60%, especially in the morning and in the evening otherwise, you risk the attraction of thrips and red spider mites. Studies keep repeating that Paphiopedilum like chalky soils. Photos and research projects in natural habitats show clearly the plants grow in humus nests on rocks and trees. Thesis, unlike the chalk rock have an acidic pH value, however, lady's slippers like calcium in the medium or in the fertiliser.  Our orchid fertilizer ORCHI-FIT contains sufficient calcium for Paphiopedilum species.

Paphiopedilum can be divided into 4 cultivation groups, depending on their origins.
Cold and shady,
The species of this group comes from the highlands of the Himalayas where they grow in shady places. During winter, they should be kept in a room with minimal heating like a bedroom or the hallway. Do not use any fertiliser and minimal water during this period. After this rest period, they will start to form their flowers. They are usually ready to flower in late spring time. Some examples: Paph. Insigne, Paph.
Hirsutissimum, Paph. Villosum and others can be recognised by the longish, narrow, light green leaves.

Cold and maximum light,
These species come from the highlands of the Himalayas and grow in exposed places. In winter they should be kept in a room that is not too warm, like a bedroom or the hallway. In this period they need only minimum water and no fertiliser. They will start to form their flowers at the end of this cold period and flower in the late spring. Typical examples of this group are Paphiopedilum micranthum and Paphiopedilum armeniacum. They grow in Yunnan (China), in altitudes up to 2000m. In winter they are covered with snow.  Please note: some of these species grow in warm places.

Warm and shady,
This group contains nearly all lady's-slippers with spotted leaves and those that flower successively (like Paphiopedilum primulinum). They grow in a large area from Bhutan across Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. They usually grow in the lowlands up to altitudes of 1500m. They like an intermediate to warm environment and must be protected from sunlight especially in summer.
Some examples of the successively flowering species: Paph. primulinum, Paph. Chamberlainianum, Paph. glaucophyllum ...
Examples of species with spotted leaves: Paph.callosum, Paph. lawrenceanum, Paph. curtisii, Paph. venustum ....

Warm and with a lot of light,
This group contains multi flower lady's slipper like Paph. rothschildianum, Paph. stonei, Paph. philippinense and many more. In nature, you can find them in exposed and sometimes very warm places. Depending on their natural habitat, the minimum temperature in winter should not drop below 16°c. They can support maximum light however, they need to be protected from sunlight in summer.
LIGHT – With the aid of minerals taken up by the roots, light absorbed from the sun, and carbon dioxide from the air, green leaves produce energy to grow and flower.
This process is called photosynthesis, “Paphs” require a much lower light intensity than cattleyas, dendrobiums or cymbidiums for this to occur at an optimum level. An easy light test is to move your hand about 50cm above the foliage on a sunny day. If a noticeable shadow is cast on the leaves, apply more shade.
Light: Place in any bright window but protect from mid-day sun. Leaves should be a medium-green colour. If they are too pale or yellowish, the plant could be getting too much light. (Approximately the same light intensity as African Violets is preferred.),
Most people who say they don’t have 'much luck with slippers' keep them either too bright or grow them in pots too large. When growing outdoors, shade cloth with a density of 90 % is recommended or better still, three layers of 70% so that one layer can be removed in late Autumn and added again at the end of Winter. For indoor growing, bright light but no sun (weather direct or filtered) is best. Paph leaves should always be a lush green.,

POTTING – It is worth remembering that most Paphs die from over-potting.  The smallest pot possible should be used to comfortably fit the roots.  Overly long roots are best ‘spiralled’ into the pot by turning the pot until the roots are wound in.  Frequent potting is beneficial but no more than twice a year, however healthy and mature plants can confidently be left in the same pot for two years.  Suitable materials for potting include bark, coconut chips, perlite, polystyrene, shell grit, and gravel. Particle size should not exceed 15 mm of any ingredient.
I like the bark component to be at least 50% of the volume with some coconut chips for extra water holding. It is important for the mix to be moist but never wet when potting.
Repot: Paphiopedilum should be repotted every two to three years with a fresh, well-draining potting medium, such as fine-grade orchid bark or Orchid Mix. It is important that the base of the growth be potted no deeper than 1/2" in the medium.
TEMPERATURE – The optimum temperature for most Paphs is around 26°C during the day and relative humidity of around 50% – 60%.  Paphs are however, quite tolerant to extremes. Even 40°C and just short of freezing for short periods will do no harm, but prolonged extremes will slow down growth and eventually kill. Draughts or strong winds, especially on hot days will desecrate the leaves. Air movement or fans are not required.,

WATERING – If you only have a few plants, stand the pots in the sink or a container overnight with the water level about half way up the pots, once a week. This will give them an even soaking. Rain water is preferable, fertilizer can be added. Pot plants should always be given a good soaking when dry, rather than small amounts often.
FERTILIZER – Most fertilizer brands including fish and seaweed products for indoor plants are suitable if used at a quarter to half recommended strength about once every third watering and less frequently during Winter and extremely hot weather.
he maintenance of this orchid is simple, she can be kept well in a West -, East - or South window. From spring (frostfreiheit must be ensured) the plant also on the balcony or garden, the rain feels exposed, very comfortable. In the autumn / winter is a very bright window (like South window) in a cool room of advantage (between 22-15 degrees Celsius).

Temperature:,
Paphiopedilum are divided into two temperature groups: warm and cool growers. The attractive mottled-leaf types come from the temperate zones and do best with a night temperature not below 60 degrees F. (preferably 65 degrees F.), and a day temperature of 75-85 degrees F. The solid green-leafed types come from the higher, cooler altitudes. They require a night temperature of 50-60 degrees F. and a day temperature of 70-80 degrees F.
Water:,
Paphiopedilum must be kept constantly moist or damp, but not soggy. Check frequently below the surface to determine the need for water. Normal watering intervals are between seven and ten days.
Feeding: Good results may be obtained by using a high nitrogen fertilizer (25-9-9) all year round. Feed once a month at one-third of a teaspoon or less to a gallon of water. Paphiopedilum are sensitive to fertilizer burn.

HAPPY GROWING,

QUICK CARE FOR YOUR LADY'S SLIPPER ORCHID:
1. When you first receive your Paphiopedilum choose a spot for it and move it from that spot as little as possible.
2. Once the plant gets acclimated to a certain location, they tend to stay the healthiest when left in one spot.
3. After you receive the plant wait 10-12 days before watering it, after the first watering, water it once a week. When watering is complete, ensure that all the residual water has drained from the bottom of the pot before replacing it in its decorative container. Enjoy.
A beautiful and easy to care for Paph that has 4-inch long petaled flowers with striped petals and a pink pouch.  Plant has one growth and should flower in 18-24 months.
