The Flambeau Mine, near Ladysmith in Rusk County, Wisconsin produced
some of the very finest crystalline chalcocite specimens the world has
ever seen. The mine was a quite small open pit mine and was only in operation for a
few years back in the mid 1990's, was quickly worked out by 1997, and since then the mine site has been completely restored (the pit has been filled in and the area has been totally revegetated, you can't even see the mine workings today). During its short life, this locality produced a number of truly world class crystalline chalcocite specimens. Chalcocite is a fairly common copper ore mineral, but it is rarely found in good quality crystalline form such as these renown specimens from the Flambeau Mine, which is considered a significant locality for this species in the world!
This is a very nice and superbly colored thumbnail sized specimen from this classic and highly desired locality measuring 2.3 x 2.2 x 1.5 cm in size, and it comes professionally labeled and mounted in a 1.25 inch square clear hinged plastic case and ready for immediate display. The entire specimen is composed of varied growths of chalcocite crystals with most of the exterior of the piece covered by a thin layer of bornite colored an iridescent blue and purple. This is a very interesting specimen and its really worth a good look under a hand lens to truly discover its full complexities and beauty.
