How to choose the right shuttlecock?

We all know what a badminton shuttlecock is: 16 pieces of feather attached on a cork base. But why are there so much different in the prices?

The price of a shuttlecock is predominately determined by the costs of the feather and cork base.

Shuttlecocks are not born equal. A good shuttlecock is usually made of goose feather. One goose can only produce about 16 pieces of flight feathers that can be used to make shuttlecock. Because every piece of feather comes in different shape, of the 16 pieces of feathers in a goose, only 1-2 pieces can be used to make top grade shuttlecock, the rest are divided again to produce different grades of shuttlecocks.

A top grade shuttlecock uses natural softwood as cork base because of their lightweight but high dense characteristics. The cheaper shuttlecocks use synthetic softwood or even artificial materials as cork base.

Shuttlecocks are expendables. No matter how good a shuttlecock is, it will break eventually. And the costs add up quickly.
