3. What if I cannot find this OBDII socket or if the socket I found does not have 16 pins?
On some Japanese Domestic Model (JDM) cars which were converted from RHD to LHD, it is on the passenger side of the dashboard. If what you found is not a 16 pin socket, then most likely your car is not OBDII. It could be OBDI (models before 1996). If the diagnostic connector or Data Link Connector (DLC) of your car is in the engine compartment, it is almost always not OBDII compliant.
4. How do I determine which OBD II protocol to use on a particular vehicle?
OBD II specifies 5 different electrical protocols which can be used to access OBD II information. Automotive manufacturers are required to implement one of the mandated OBD II protocols. CAN is becoming the mandated OBD II protocol for all new vehicles. In the near future all vehicles will use this protocol to communicate
5. What additional hardware is required to communicate with a vehicle using OBD II?
You cannot connect microprocessor outputs directly to the J1962 connector on a vehicle. You will require some simple external circuitry including:
- a CAN transceiver
- a voltage boost to 12V for the ISO/KWP lines (this must be weakly pulled up to 12V by a 510 ohm resistor)
- a variable voltage boost for J1850+ (5V for PWM, 7.5V for VPW)
- a boost to 5V for J1850- (this line should also be pulled up to 5V)
6. What is the difference between OBD II and CANbus?
OBD II and CANbus are different thing. The OBD II is a standard that must be supported on all modern cars in order to retrieve diagnostic information. The CANbus however, is one of the five electrical protocols over which the OBD II standard can be used. All North American cars since 2008 must support OBD II over CAN, however, it is not enough to just have a CAN bus connection to communicate with these vehicles - one must also implement the OBD II standard.
7. Why can't I attach a PC directly to the vehicle?
The OBD2 vehicle connecter uses different voltages and modulations then what a PC can handle. It the bare minimum voltage levels need to be converted.
8. Will the same converter work on every vehicle?
Although OBD2 is a standard, each manufacturer is free to implement it in their own way. There are essentially four different types of electrical interfaces. Some converters will handle only one of the interfaces, others will handle multiple interfaces, some claim to be universal.
