ENJOY SOME HOT TUB BLISS FROM JAPAN
INSPIRED by living in Kyoto, Paul and Karman Whitford have brought zen into their lives with a hot tub opening to their garden.
Karman Whitford and Sumi love the bathroom.
‘‘Every day in winter, we’d go to the ‘Sento’ – the public baths,’’ Paul recalls.
‘‘I still go as much as I can when I’m in Kyoto.’’
Paul travels to Japan regularly to source imports for the couple’s antiques, art and textiles warehouse, Edo Arts, in Terrey Hills.
‘‘We also loved the ‘onsen’, the Japanese hot spring baths, which are outside. The bathroom was a combination of our evolving ideas ,’’ he says
The couple have been renovating their Northern Beaches home since buying it in 1996 and upgraded the bathroom four years ago.
‘‘It was a 1950s beach house, and the bathroom was very simple. We wanted to open it up to the garden, which is also a Balinese thing,’’ Paul explains.
‘‘We tried to keep the elements of stone and wood, and look straight through the trees. You slide the door open and feel the breeze.’’
Privacy is provided by the back garden’s landscape.
‘‘We are hidden by the garden and we are in a corner,’’ Paul adds.
He waterproofed a Kyoto sushi counter into a bathroom bench, accentuated by stone sinks, split marble tiling and a Japanese rock near the shower.
But the Round Bath Company hot tub, framed by Paul’s wooden covering, takes centre stage.
It works as an indoor spa, and is constantly warm and full, bar cleaning.
‘‘It is for relaxation rather than washing,’’ he says.
‘‘It renews and reinvigorates you. It’s a Japanese thing.’’
