Dynaco made this preamp in several versions with many parts variations within each version. Many sellers do not know how to distinguish PAS 2,3 from PAS 3X. The 3X is later most desirable version. The distinguishing factor that separates the versions is that PAS-3X has tone control bypass caps from tone controls to pc board. These null the controls at center position. There is almost no labeling difference on the preamp or serial number. The serial number and designation is only on the manual which is often lost or separated from the preamp. But there are some physical differences between the versions.

PAS 2 and 3 have: Typically push on tone control knobs which have 270 rotation. No tone control bypass caps. Typically power supply caps are Red or orange (early version) or Green later version).

PAS 2 often has label on rear stating PAS 2. PAS 2 has brass face and plastic brown knobs. Aluminum face and metal knobs was an optional upgrade. PAS 3 has aluminum face standard.

PAS-3X has: Often has set screws on tone control knobs as well as separation and balance. Typically tone control knobs are short 180 rotation. (different pots than PAS 3). Always has Bypass caps on tone controls to board for center null. Typically Silver power supply caps. Aluminum face standard.

Factory Wired vs Kit: Most PAS preamps were sold as model kits and were assembled in the home by hobbyist. Assembly skill varies as is evident from component install, wire routing, and most of all, soldering skills. Small screws were used to hold the rear jacks in place. Factory wired was an option at extra cost in which the preamp was purchased fully assembled by a tech at the Dynaco factory. A metalized sticker stating "factory wired" is on the rear panel and the rear jacks are riveted, not screwed.

I have served as electronic tech since the 1960s and worked in aerospace and US Navy.

My Dynaco amps and preamps are inspected for overall condition, soldering, proper installation, and wire routing.

We often find leaky power supply caps, weak tubes, cold/insufficient solder joints, boards installed on the wrong side of chassis, wires routed like a birds nest, loose hardware, missing feet, etc.

Repairs are made and units are play tested for a minimum of one hour to make sure that you are pleased with our results.
