VINTAGE FINE GREEN LEATHER JEWELLERY CASE FOR EARRINGS FROM JOHN CASTLE OF BOND STREET, LONDON.

MULTIPURPOSE DISPLAY AND PRESENTATION BOX.

This is a very fine box and was sold to contain a pair of very expensive 

diamond and emerald earrings and matching brooch. Hence, it is a high quality box though my 

pictures do not do justice to the quality of the box and the lovely green of 

the fine leather.

Fine green leather jewellery box for earrings or earrings/brooch set from John Castle of Bond Street, London. John Castle was a fashionable goldsmith and jeweller who sold exquisite and unique pieces from his shop in Mayfair and was active in the latter half of the last century.

This box dates to the late 1970s and I can confirm originally contained 

matching earrings and brooch.

Please examine the photos carefully - there are unusual and 

intriguing aspects to this box.

The exterior of this sprung box is of fine green (british racing green) leather and both upper and lower lids have a solid gilded border. The lid has an indentation mark though the leather is unbroken (see photos). There is a very small scuff to the leather (clearly shown in photo) to one of the upper lid side panels. Otherwise, the exterior leather is in very nice condition.

The interior has a luxurious piled and padded cream velvet covered base with a cream silk satin tag to lift it out. There are slots for the earrings to sit in. Under the cream base is an ingenious little envelope (for spare butterflies?) and the base has a stay which opens to stand the cream velvet base upright for display purposes.

The lid is lined with clean white silk satin embossed with the gilded lettering:

The interior is in very good condition. The silk satin lid is bright and unmarked. The cream velvet base has a slight degree of darkening from normal usage. There is a small hole in the centre of the pad where the matching brooch was inserted. The say joining upper to lower lid is unfrayed as is the loop ribbon.

This is a sprung box which opens and closes perfectly and with 

ease.The hinges are in perfect condition and hold the box open at any 

width up to the limit of the box opening which is about a 75 degree 

angle. The box closes with a satisfactory sharp snap.

Approx 64mm across x 67 length x 25mm high

Upper and lower lids are of equal height.

This is a very high quality vintage earring or earring/brooch box from a Mayfair based goldsmith and  jeweller in lovely condition and this is reflected in the price.
