A VERY EARLY AND SCARCE EDITION OF THIS RLS MASTERPIECE WITH ORIGINAL DUST JACKET!!
Robert Louis Stevenson had already secured a spot on the HAYCRAFT CORNERSTONE of notable detective fiction with his first book of fiction (in America), NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS, 1882, a short story collection. (A copy of this book may be available in my listings) A mere four years later, Stevenson published a novella that showed him as a master of the science fiction/horror genre. His stunning tale, THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEYKLL AND MR. HYDE, has never been out of print and has been filmed multiple times. The personality complex that RLS created has passed into our modern lexicon to describe radically opposing behavior.
Scribner's was the first US publisher in 1886 and since this was five years prior to the passage of the American copyright laws, countless pirate publishers jumped on this Stevenson gem. While some of the pirate printings were decorative Victorian bindings, many more were cheap paperbacks on brown pages. A.L.BURT came into being in the late 1890, becoming a successful major reprint house. It's binding for J&H was created about 1899 and is the best visible presentation I have seen with the character(s) reproduced on the front and spine. This copy is likely about 1910, judging by the publisher's address on the dust jacket.
The book is in Good condition, with little wear to edges and corners. The spine ends are rubbed and darkened where the dust jacket had chipped away. Endpapers clean and white and hinge are perfect. Textblock is square and strong, without damage or stains. The original dust jacket, now more than 100 years old, has all panels. There are chips and tears along the perimeter and large paper loss from the spine panel and rear panel corner. I have filled these missing spaces with copy from another dust jacket .

DEVILWHEATON...never occurred to me when I had to come up with an EBay name that this one might seem odd to others. It is actually a punch line or payoff line from a Brit comedy show that I borrowed. I've always had dogs and if I had to pick a favorite, it is the Soft-Coated Wheaton Terrier. Its a sweet and beautiful pal when all groomed up... a real show stopper.
