Rare Lake Superior Copper Banded Replacement Agate

St. Louis Mine

Copper Banded Replacement Agates are  a rare form of the Lake Superior Agate. Only in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, a billion years ago did volcanoes melt copper and pushed it into the agates effectively replacing bands of chalcedony (agate) with copper. There is currently nowhere else in the world with copper banded agates that these agates may be found.Occasionally, found on the Shores of Lake Superior. Most of these agates have been found in the abandoned mine dumps of Keweenaw County, Michigan. The Wolverine agates are known for their unusual colored agates.
