Original mixed media oil painting on board by artist Shelley Jamaine. ( No 716 )

This is a recent artwork from a new series of paintings that I started in 2016 entitled Gothic Psychedelic. This series of works are inspired by Gothic symbolism and patterns and textures in nature combined with bright expressionistic and lively colours.

This series I am making at the moment involves materials such as gold and silver leaf combined with bright colours and bold patterns to create layered environments and visual movement inspired by 1960's Optical Art ( art work and artists that used colours formed in intense and often geometric patterns to create visual movement and illusions of movement within artwork).

The bold black lines in these paintings were inspired by Gothic stained glass lead work and the stripes and check patterned areas were inspired by Op Art and psychedelic patterns and colours.

The flower shapes, leaves, bones and eyeballs and bird wings were inspired by Gothic horror style tattoo and jungle plants.

The way I use pattern in these Gothic Psychedelic art works is deliberately planned and involving colour theory methods to make the viewer's eye travel across and around the painting in certain ways.

These works aim to create effects of movement and chaos and often colour discord ( where colours are not in harmony with each other but in opposition, to create a strong and striking visual effect).

I wanted this piece to combine different styles of painting to create layers of pattern and visual
movement, so I used loose abstract paint drips and spray paint interwoven with more stylised and detailed motifs.

Suggested places to hang this painting...

This would make a nice house warming present for someone in a new house who needs a bit of modern decoration on the walls and this painting would suit a smaller room or an area of wall such as in a lounge, main bedroom or kitchen.

As the main colours are very bold, this painting would look good on a white wall as it would contrast well.

The textured parts and nature scene would appeal to children as it is interesting to touch so this would also be suitable to hang in a child's room.

Dimensions and hanging advice...

The dimensions of this art work are 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm and the board is 3 mm deep.

This painting is on a board and it already has string attached to the back for hanging.

You could also use sticky fixers for hanging pictures. You can buy these from DIY stores.

The sides are painted black and this painting is also signed on the back.

A bit about me...

Originally from West Yorkshire, I have exhibited my art work nationally and I sell my art work both nationally and internationally. I work from my studio in Essex where I spend the majority of my time painting and planning my next works. Along with producing one off original pieces of various different sized and mediums, I have also done some large mural commissions.

I studied Painting and Drawing at Huddersfield University, graduated in 2006 with a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting and Drawing. I won an award for highest marks in my first year of this course and I have worked as a professional artist ever since.

I also studied textiles at Bradford College during my art foundation course where I was awarded a merit for high achievement and I feel this now feeds back into my work when I make my textile and mixed media art works.

I am inspired by decaying nature, bright colours and all things to do with the Gothic subculture. I like to combine my favourite inspirations in an overall New Gothic expressionistic art style, so much of my work has Gothic symbolism or motifs such as skulls and skeletal shapes with bright contrasting colours. I like the contrast between these two opposing styles.

I am particularly interested in natural forms and textures and the feelings they can evoke when used within contemporary art work. I like to imitate or embody these specific interests within my art works and I often to this within imaginary forest landscapes that I create.

I also make finely detailed purely abstract paintings that are inspired by human anatomy, skeletal shapes, abstract expressionism and experimentation.
