We will soon be listing a tintype we believe to be a Post Mortem baby with family.

This is an especially interesting and poignant antique CDV, Carte de Visite.  This is a photo of a Post Mortem girl.  She is propped up and looks almost normal posing next to her brother.  His hand is on her shoulder.  Her eyes were probably closed so they are enhanced, as are her lips.  Where they touched the eyes and lips, the photographer scratched the are so the ink would set.  It looks interesting and a little weird through a loupe.  It is likely that the family had a recent photo of either child and wanted one of both together.  Post Mortem children were sometimes propped up so they would have the illusion of life.  It is a sad scene.  The CDV is a brownish color with a slight golden tinge.  It's condition is ok as there are stains above the children and a short tear at the left edge near the middle.  The corner tips are bumped.  The CDV is 2 12 by 4 inches.  We estimate this to be from 1860, give or take a few short years.  What an interesting portrait!
