If you're looking for a cookie-cutter bike from a bike shop with row upon row of identical "product", this is not the bike for you.  If you're looking for a bike you can throw in the back of your pickup and forget about it, then I won't sell you this bike.  But if you're looking for a unique, high-performance machine that is so stunningly beautiful that you'll think you're having an LSD flashback, read on.

NEW PARTS:

New Rockshox Lyrik 180mm (!) fork.  Loooooong travel gives you a plush ride, unbelievable traction, and warp speed on the downhill.

New WTB Team Issue i23 wheels.  Wide enough to support the 2.6 inch tires, but not so wide and heavy that you feel like you're pedaling through a swamp of shit.  No worries climbing or sprinting.

New Schwalbe Rocket Ron 27.5 x 2.6 inch tires.  These are my secret weapon.  They are lightweight, high-performance, tubeless tires that are fat enough to have all the Plus benefits without the disappointing performance of the larger Plus tires.  If you need more info on Plus tires, scroll down for my eloquent rant.

New Shimano XT 11-speed drivetrain with an 11-46 (!) cassette.  No chairlift or pickup truck needed to get you to the top of the mountain.

New Shimano XT brakes.  The best, duh.

New SRAM GX BB30 crank with a 32 tooth narrow-wide chainring.  Simple and bomb-proof.

New Spank Spoon 40mm stem.  Short stems give you precise steering.

New RaceFace bar; 29 inches wide.  Wide bars give ultimate control through rocks, ruts , and roots.

PRE-OWNED PARTS:

Specialized S-Works Enduro frame, size Large, with a custom suspension link to fine tune the geometry.  Since we're using 650b wheels and the long-travel fork the frame gets tweaked a bit with the custom shock link.  This keeps the bottom bracket at the right height and keeps the fork angle enduro-race friendly.  It also increases the rear suspension travel to 165mm.  This bike is flickable and corners like it's on rails but still eats up rough trail like a Cheeta.  I'm including the stock link as well.  Switching to it would give you more of a downhill racer or chairlift bike.  And did I mention the Troy Lee Designs custom paint?  Feast your eyes.  Hang it on the wall between rides - it's art.  The custom paint is perfect on the main frame.  The rear triangle has a few scuffs that were touched up.

The seatpost is also pre-owned.  It's the Specialized Command Post with three positions; up for pedaling, partway down for flowing, and slammed for steep chutes and switchbacks.

This is the nicest bike I've had.  Gawd, I wish I could afford to keep it.  The long-travel suspension does more than just get you downhill first - it also gives you incredible cornering traction.  Stick your elbows out, put your chin on the stem, jam down that foot on the outside pedal - and you will corner on any dirt surface like you've got a rope around your waist going along the radius of the corner.  It feels like a video game that you can't lose cranked up to level 10.

No pedals are included with this bike.

The bike has been ridden just once since it was put together - just enough to make sure everything is working and to seat the brakes.  It's sitting in the garage now, waiting for you.  Have a few beers, dust off that emergency credit card, and pull the trigger.  You might have a little buyer's remorse in the morning - maybe not - I wouldn't.  But I do know you'll wind up with the bike of your life.  Don't pass it up.

Some Thoughts On B+ Tires

I’ve been riding the B+ tires from the beginning, for over two years now.  I’ve spent as much time on them as anyone so I feel qualified to share my experiences for your information.  I’ve come to believe that B+ is the biggest improvement in mountain biking since 29 inch wheels.

First let me clarify some confusion on the subject; B+ tires ARE 29ers, or maybe you could call them 28.5ers.  When you’re talking about 26er’s, 27.5er’s or 29er’s, you’re talking about the diameter of the tire – not the rim.  Rims are a different number like 650b or 700c.  So the B+ tires with a diameter about the same as a conventional 29er tire (the tires I use are a little over 28 inches) is really just a fatter 29er tire.  Think of it as being mounted on a smaller rim to compensate for the fatter tire.  A fatter tire can run at a lower air pressure.  And this creates some amazing advantages:

A smoother ride:  Hardtails become plush and suspension bikes become the most amazing experience you’ve had on a bike.

More traction:  You can ride up things that you never could before.  You can descend through the chunder like it was powder snow.  And maybe most important; you can corner on any surface with much more speed and control than ever before.

Excellent flotation:  Sand becomes a non issue.  You’ll roll straight through while everyone else is cutting deep snake shapes in the sand.  Snow?  You can do it, but really, if you’re lucky enough to live in a snowy winter dust off your skis.

Makes you a technical God:  The big soft tires let you roll through places that always stopped you before.  A tangle of roots?  Just go straight through it and continue on unperturbed.  A steep rut full of rocks?  Have some fun with it and use it for a half pipe.  A technical stepped climb?  Stand up and ride up it as if you were walking in great big steps.

No performance downside:  These are not “fat bikes”.  Some call then “mid-fat”, but why worry about labels anyway?  The high performance tires and rims available now make the wheelsets lighter than a conventional 29er wheelset.  The B+ bikes feel frisky and like to jump off the ground.  They are NOT fat bikes.  The secret (don’t tell anyone) to making these bikes fast is to use wheels and tires that are lightweight.  The Plus bikes you see at your bike shop will have big wide rims and overly big tires.  They pedal like pigs.  Use only a rim wide enough to work and a light 2.6” or 2.8” tire and the bike will come alive.

A safer ride:  Everyone likes to push it a little – some like to push it a lot.  The big tires give you some wiggle room when things get a little out of control.  Everything happens a little more predictably and you can manage the slippery corners with way more confidence and control.

Since most of these tires have about a 29 inch diameter, many existing 29er frames can be easily upgraded to the B+ tires.  The issue of course is tire clearance and it varies from bike model to model.  The bikes I put together are picked with an eye toward sufficient tire clearance.  Any project you attempt should start with this in mind.  As new bikes are designed and built this will all be taken care of.

B+ tires will pick up your game:  If you are a beginning rider, this is the fastest way to join your intermediate buddies.  If you’re an advanced rider, the B+ tires will make you feel like a God.

The big bike companies are starting to make B+ bikes now.  They are basically a 29er frame and fork with more tire clearance.  They are charging top dollar.  Most of the new models are hardtails, but if you really want to turn it up to ELEVEN, go full suspension.  Get in on the fun now, check out my offerings.  I’m sold on the B+ and I’ll guarantee if you give it a try you won’t be disappointed.
