The Rosary of the

Seven Sorrows of Mary

This beautiful devotional is a variation on a regular rosary.  It consists of seven groups of seven beads, with a beginning section of three beads.  Instead of the traditional 15 Mysteries, when praying with these beads, you meditate on the seven sorrowful events of Mary's life :

  1. The Prophecy of Simeon
  2. The Flight into Egypt
  3. Losing the Child Jesus in Jerusalem
  4. Carrying the Cross
  5. The Crucifixion
  6. Receiving Christ's Body from the Cross
  7. The burial of Jesus

To help you remember these events, this rosary has beautiful nickel silver medals, each with an image of one of the seven sorrows on one side.  The other side of the medals has the image of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.  The medals are about 1/2" ovals. The three beads in the beginning section, which represent Mary's tears, are 8mm smooth round translucent genuine amethyst gemstone beads in a beautiful shade of lavender.  The rest of the beads, the 49 Sorrows beads, are faceted and firepolished Czech glass in a lovely jewel-tone sapphire blue. The purple amethyst stones represent sorrow and is the color of Lent and also Advent and is the color of royalty to represent the King of Kings.  Blue is the Blessed Virgin Mary's color.  All of the beads are a generous 8mm size.

Traditionally, the Seven Sorrows rosary is a wonderful gift to give your mother, to show appreciation for the sorrows which she endured, along with the joys, of her motherhood; for the same reason, it's an excellent gift for Father's Day, too!   The colors are suitable for a man or woman, boy or girl.  These make a great gift for First Communion or Confirmation, too.

At the beginning of this chaplet is a larger 1" medal with Our Lady on the front and the crucifixion scene with St John and the Blessed Mother on the reverse.   The entire rosary is about 21 1/2" long. (It looks beautiful worn as a long necklace, too). It was handmade in the USA by my sister, Joan.

To pray the Seven Sorrows Rosary, say an Our Father on each picture medal and a Hail Mary on each of the beads. This devotion is dates back to the 14th century and would make a unique and beautiful gift for someone who already has a rosary.  It's also a great way to enhance your prayer life, especially during Lent.  In addition to praying the rosary every day for Lent, add the Seven Sorrows Rosary for even more meaningful meditation. This rosary comes gift boxed and with the following:
