Here we have for sale a stunning quality antique Edwardian mahogany coffer / ottoman made by the renowned London
cabinetmaker, T. Willson of 68 Great Queen Street London, in excellent original condition. Constructed circa 1900, this coffer boasts a
single piece mahogany top (a sign of quality) with an elegant gadroon
moulding. Below the coffer features top
quality fielded cushion fronted mahogany panels to the front and sides with
outer reeded beading. Decorative brass swan
neck handles and shaped brass back plates are visible on the sides of the
coffer. The coffer retains its original
key escutcheon and lock, which includes a working key. The lid retains its original locking
clasp. Three strong brass hinges attach
the lid and it can easily support its own weight when opened. The cabinetmakers name is stamped on the
inside frame. The
interior of the ottoman is lined in mahogany and boasts four quadrant sections
above the legs for additional support (this design was predominantly used by
only the best cabinetmakers). Elegantly shaped cabriole
legs that feature scroll carvings to the upper section of the legs and gadroon
moulding to the frieze of the coffer, terminate in pronounced ball and claw
feet.
This coffer / ottoman would be ideal at the foot
of a bed, for storing clothes, or used on a landing or in a hallway. It could also be used as coffee table or
trunk in the living room. It has a
beautiful deep rich mahogany patina, which has been generated by the years of
cleaning and care it has received.
This ottoman boasts a rich mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a
fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and
years of care and cleaning it has received.
Provenance:
Thomas Willson of 68 Great Queen Street, London, was from a firm of
family cabinetmakers, which were established in 1818. This family of cabinetmakers was renowned for
their use of quality materials and exceptional craftsmanship. Not only did they produce furniture in their
workshops, they also ran a furniture warehouse, furniture works and upholstery
business at the same address through the latter half of the 19th
Century.
This coffer is stamped 'T. Willson, 68 Great Queen Street, London' on
the inside frame. Antique furniture marked with the makers name has always been
desirable and is becoming rare and difficult to find. Furniture with cabinetmakers stamps is
popular and most often than not, proves to be a good investment in the long
term.
