'Blast Off!' is the debut album by composer/arranger/producer/performer Kyle O'Donnell. For a brief back story on the album, read what Kyle, himself, had to say about this project: When I first embarked on this project, I had no idea as to what direction to pursue. However, as time went on the vision became more and more clear. I wanted to reach every possible listener that I could. How does one do that? By removing any and all boundaries there may be that keep listeners on the outside looking in. I made no restrictions as to what genre to stick with or what labels to give the music. There is truly something for everyone on this album. Genres including rock, funk, love songs, ballads, jazz, hip-hop and reggae are all represented on this record. You'd be hard pressed to not find a song you'd enjoy. This project is very unique for a number of reasons. From start to finish, I have been involved in every aspect of the production of this album. I even helped build and finance elements of the studio in which the album was recorded (Big Booth Productions, Youngstown, OH). I have dreamt of this project becoming a reality for a long time. This album covers material that I have been developing over the last 6 years, primarily falling within the last year and a half however. I wrote seven of the tunes myself. Two of them are arrangements of song that I have admired for a while. The remaining tune is an improvised jam made up entirely on the spot. I played numerous instruments on this album as well. I am primarily a trumpet player with an emphasis on jazz, however, I also play flugelhorn, piano/keyboard, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar and drum set. I wanted to represent my versatility in every facet of production from writing and arranging to performing, editing and producing. Luckily, I was not alone on my quest to produce this album. I am fortunate enough to know a great deal of very talented musicians. I am even more fortunate to have had a number of them contribute to this project. In total, The Big Booth Orchestra is comprised of 17 musicians, myself included. I also received support in the artistic direction as well. My cousin provided the art work for this album. As you can see by looking at the CD jacket, he is an incredible talent as well. Last, but certainly not least, I received generous donations from a large majority of friends and family. Whether it be donating money to my fund raising program, donating their performances or donating their time and facilities, I am incredibly blessed to have the support group that I do. This project would have remained a dream if they hadn't acted the way they did and really provided for me when I needed it most. I hope that everyone who reads this and hears my album is not sorry that they took time out to do either. This album is for YOU. Plain and simple. I have been lucky enough to hear incredible music over the years and my life has been forever changed by it. I hope that this project will have the same effect on somebody one day, even if it's just one person. Personally, I hope that individual is you. All of you. Music is a beautiful and amazing thing.
