Another Fine Quality Print from Martin2001
|
See the condition note below.
The photos show the print after and before the fold was smoothed out.
Print Specifics:
- Type of print: Wood Engraving - Original antique print
- Year of printing: not indicated in the print - est. 1890s
- Artist: Gelibert
- Publisher: Richard Bong, Hanfstaengl, Berlin.
- Condition: 2 (1. Excellent - 2. Very good - 3. Good - 4. Fair)
- The print was originally folded in the
middle by
the publisher, making this print unsuitable for framing and display. In order to
return this print 'to life,' I carefully smoothed out the fold/crease,
touched it up and applied a medium heavy, archival tape on the back of the fold
to prevent it from reoccurring. Although it is impossible to completely smooth out the fold/crease, from a
normal viewing distance the original fold/crease is virtually indiscernible.
- Very light age toning of paper along the original fold.
- Dimensions: 14 x 21 inches, including blank margins (borders) around the image.
- Paper weight: 3 (1. Thick - 2. Heavier - 3. Medium heavy - 4. Slightly heavier - 5. Thin)
- Reverse side: Blank
Notes:
- Green color around the print in the photo is a contrasting background on which the print was photographed.
- 1 inch = 2,54 cm.
Narrative:
- At the end of the 19th Century,
photography was becoming the medium of choice for making prints of
the original works of art. Until then, the engraving was the predominant
medium used for this purpose. The engravers, challenged by this new
competitive medium, were perfecting their skills and creating wood engravings
of unparalleled accuracy, quality and beauty. They became works of art
in their own right. The print offered here for sale is one of those works
of art.
