Licensing

There are two key differences regarding types of the license for Microsoft SQL Server.

You may use either type. One is usually more cost effective for you than the other.

Per User

This license type typically covers 1 server of any size and has a maximum number of users that can be connected to that server at any one time. The license for each user is known as a CAL or Concurrent Access License.

For example, if you had 12 employees connecting to the database at any one time then you would need a license with at least 12 CALs but you can have an unlimited number of processing cores on the server.

Per Core

This license type typically covers 1 server with a maximum number of processing cores and permits an unlimited number of users that can be connected to that server at any one time.

For example, if you had a server with 8 cores, you would need a license with at least 8 cores but an unlimited number of users could connect at any one time.
