ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ELEPHANT BASKET NODDING HEAD FIGURINE

This attractive antique nodder is probably of continental origin, and we would estimate it to date from the late nineteenth century. There is what we believe to be a decorator's number on the bottom. The elephant is unglazed, although parts of the rider and the basket are glazed. The rider and basket have blue and gilt highlights. There is a small metal pin through the neck of the elephant and its head nods up and down on this pivot.

Condition: Overall in good condition with some wear consistent with age. The ear of the elephant has been broken at some point and glued back on, and there is a chip to the neck opening of the elephant. There are some manufacturing flaws as might be expected and some rubbing and wear to the paintwork. It is overall a little grubby and would benefit from a careful clean. The metalwork has some surface corrosion. We believe the pin throgh the neck of the elephant to be a replacement and it is misshapen.
