PAIR OF BOXED VINTAGE 5" KEWPIE-STYLE COMPOSITION DOLLS

This sweet pair of Kewpie-style dolls are still tied into their original box and we have not removed them from the ties. They are made of composition with jointed arms - please note that the girl's arms are loose in the box. They have painted facial features, socks and shoes and are wearing their orignal outfits. They are not marked with a maker's mark that we can see (although it is not possible to examine their backs), but we would estimate them to date from the 1920s and to be of Japanese origin.

Condition: Overall in good condition with some wear consistent with age. The figures are still tied in to the box and we have not removed them. The box has no lid and the figures and the inside of the box are very grubby and dusty. The figures have some marks and scuffs (particularly where the box has rubbed) and would benefit from a careful clean. As is mentioned above the girl's arms are detached, but present and require restringing. There are some manufacturing flaws as might be expected. There is some cracking to the surface of the composition around the girl's neck where the string holding her into the box has rubbed - the boy's string is too tight to see if this is the same for him. Their outfits have some age-related grubbiness, discolouration and wear. The box is in fair-poor condition. It is missing its lid and has some staining, squashing and tearing. The paper fringe around the inside of the box is torn and discoloured with loss.
