Types
of Pearl
Freshwater Pearls-The
Fashion Forward Pearl: The most affordable pearls sold today, freshwater pearls
are known for baroque shapes, white and pastel body colors and softer luster
than akoya (except in the case of rare metallic). With natural pastel colors and
shapes that range from perfectly round to free-form baroque, freshwater pearls
offer a widest range of options. Common sizes range from 5 mm to 12 mm, but
recent advances have led to the development of round and baroque pearls as
large as 20 mm. If you are looking for an affordable piece or something more
fashion-forward with unique combinations of colors and shapes, shop freshwater
pearls.
Akoya Pearls-The
Classic Pearl: For nearly 100 years, akoya pearls grown off the coast of Japan
have been the classic pearl of choice. When one pictures a round strand of
white pearls, they are usually thinking of akoya. Although rare baroque shapes
and natural colors like silver-blue and gold do exist, akoya pearls are best
known for their perfectly round shape and sharp, reflective luster. While
exceptions do exist, most akoya pearls produced today range in sizes from 4 to
10 mm. If you are looking for a classic strand of round, white pearls, you are
probably looking for a strand of akoya pearls.
South Sea Pearls-The
Rolls Royce of Pearls: Grown primarily in Australia the Philippines and
Indonesia and ranging in color from white to gold, South Sea pearls are the
largest saltwater pearls grown today. Because of their tremendous size,
perfectly round South Sea pearls are quite rare. Other more common shapes are
drops, baroques and ovals. All are considered very valuable. While South Sea
pearls range in size from 8 mm to 18 mm, the most common sizes range from 10 mm
to 14 mm. If you looking for the statement piece of jewelry with large pearls,
South Sea may be the way to go.
Tahitian Pearls-The
Dark, Exotic Pearls: Tahitian pearls grown in French Polynesia are the only
naturally dark pearls. Although often referred to as black, Tahitian pearls
come in a rainbow of exotic colors. Round Tahitian pearls are quite rare but
other fun shapes like drops, baroques and ovals are highly-sought and still
considered very valuable. When measured perpendicular to the drill hole, most
Tahitians range in size from 8 mm to 15 mm regardless of shape. If you are
looking for a naturally dark pearls that go well with almost any style,
Tahitian pearls may be your best choice.
Natural
Pearls vs. Cultured Pearls vs. Imitation Pearls
Both
natural and cultured pearls are grown by oysters and are therefore considered
valued jewels---gifts of nature. The difference is that natural pearls begin by
accident while cultured pearls are initiated by man. Imitation pearls, on the
other hand, are man made by mechanical processes and have no real jewel value.
Unfortunately due to sophiscated manufacturing and polishing techniques, it may
be difficult for the average consumer to distinguish a natural or cultured
pearl from a good imitation by sight.
Pearl
Grading
We
divide our quality pearls into four grades: AAAA, AAA, AA and A. Plus or minus
is added to the grades if the pearls fall between the two grades, for example,
AAAA+, AAA-, AA+ or A+. Since there is no standard grading system worldwide or
nationwide and each jeweler use its own discretion in rating the pearls, it is
important that you must know size, luster, surface condition, or shape, which
are the main elements that determines the price of a pearl product. Please keep
it mind that it is the combination of the four major measurements that
determines the price. Some pearls maybe AAA in shape, but AA in blemishes....We
do our best to reflect the variance of quality through our pricing and our
detailed description.
Determines
the Price of Freshwater Pearls
Diameter---the
bigger the diameter, the more expensive it is.
Shape---the
rounder the pearl, the more expensive it is.
Luster---the
better the luster, the more expensive it is. The luster of a premium pearl is
like a mirror and is sold individually.
Color---rare
colors are more expensive. Black and turquoise are not the natural color of
pearls. White, pink, lavender is most common.
Surface
condition---
Selecting
a Pearl
One
of the most important considerations in selecting a piece of pearl jewelry is
determining the type of pearl that is best suited to your budget and
preference. There are two basic varieties of cultured pearls; freshwater and
saltwater. Freshwater pearls are grown primarily in man-made lakes and
reservoirs in China. Saltwater pearls, which include akoya, Tahitian and South
Sea, are grown in bays, inlets and atolls in many places around the world.
Saltwater pearls are considered more valuable than freshwater pearls, although
rare and very high-quality freshwater pearls can be exceedingly valuable.
Pearl
Care: Pearls
are the world’s only organic gemstone, and therefore, tend to be quite
delicate. Proper care of your pearl jewelry is essential to ensure your investment
will last a lifetime. Personal care products, such as perfume or hairspray, can
severely damage the luster and beauty of a pearl. With each piece of pearl
jewelry ordered from PearlParadise.com, you will receive a pearl-care kit with
instructions on how to care for your purchase.
Personal
Care Products can Damage Pearls: Cosmetics,
sun block, perfume and hair spray all contain chemicals that can dramatically
dull the luster of a pearl. The natural acids contained in body oils and
perspiration can also damage pearls in the same way. It is best to put your
pearls on at least 30 minutes after applying any personal care products, and to
take your pearls off before getting ready for bed. A good rule of thumb to
remember is that pearls should be the last things to put on and the first
things to take off.
Simple
Steps to Protect Your Pearls: Wiping the pearls with a damp, soft
cloth after you wear them will ensure that they remain free of harmful build-up
of compounds that may damage the nacre of your pearls. Always keep your pearls
separated from hard jewelry items such as rings or bracelets to prevent them
from being scratched. Pearls are best kept in a soft-cloth pouch or a
soft-lined jewelry box. Never store your pearls in an airtight environment such
a a zip lock bag. Pearls are organic and do contain trace amounts of water.
Storing them in an airtight environment will cause them to become brittle and
damage the luster.
When
to Have Pearls Restrung: If you wear your pearls often, they should
be strung about once a year to prevent strand breakage. We suggest the use of
silk thread. However, nylon thread is an acceptable alternative. The thread
should be knotted between each pearl to prevent all the pearls in a strand from
falling off should a break occur. Knotting also prevents possible damage from
the pearls rubbing against each other. Both nylon and silk will soak up the oils
from one’s skin and may turn dark after a time. Restringing the pearls with new
silk or nylon is preferred over attempting to wash the thread, as cleaning may
weaken or stretch the knots and some soaps may be abrasive and damage your
pearls.
