About this workshop

This is a design of the next generation of violins with more than 4 strings. I am very happy and encouraged by many of my customers who have contributed to make this design possible. I have combined all the ideas and rested them on a few models at the workshop with my Vecchio maker. This is a 5 strings violin. But the unique design of this violin is that it has the body of a small viola with the length scaled down to 355mm. That is small enough for a warm hi E string that will remain pleasant to our ears. We increased the archings, and combined with the wider viola ribs and adjustments in the bass bar, a clear low C string is also made possible. We've increased the fingerboard slightly to accomodate the 5 strings. And we are very happy with the outcome of the tone achieved by this violin. We've already built this for 2 of our orchestral customers, who have been very happy with them so far. And we are happy to bring this unique violin to players looking for good flexibility. We see this as a major breakthrough in our design in modern violins. Oil vanished. Matching maple, sides, neck and scroll make this a beautiful masterpiece.

About this model

Antiquated slightly for that fine touch, it is a violin with a lot of charisma. In old China, many houses are torned down to make way for new construction and the spruce that is used on these torned down houses can be used for making violins. We're lucky to acquire some of these very special aged wood, each of at least 50 years old, to be used to make one of our best models.

The Vecchio 5 string violin arrived today, thank you, in perfect condition. I'm very pleased with it, in fact it exceeds my expectations. My first favorable impression was of how light and resonant the body is. 5 string violins are difficult instruments to make comfortable, but the neck is a very comfortable shape. The instrument just feels right, it's easy to play, sounds very good, and the workmanship is excellent. Please pass on my congratulations to the maker - I may order another of these for my son sometime. 

The deep and wide violin body enables the C string to resonate well, like a small viola. When I have some minor adjustments done to suit my personal taste (I already changed the strings to Helicore, and I'll probably have the bridge adjusted for more bow clearance between the strings), it will be just what I was looking for, and excellent value. The bow which comes with it as standard is good, that way exceeded my expectations for a 'free' bow. I'm going to ask my luthier to stick the label you provided inside the violin, as other players will want to know where I got it.
