WHAT IS A GICLEE?
Giclee (pronounced zhee-clay) prints are extremely high-resolution digital scans of pictures which are then "printed" (actually sprayed) in tiny exactly mixed color droplets, guided to position by an oscillating laser beam. The carrier surface can be canvas, steel, silk, or fine archival rag papers, to name a few. Though a little like a desk-top inkjet printer, giclee printers have some important differences. They scan at a much higher resolution and deal in larger and more complex volumes of information, allowing the flexibility of a skilled operator (preferably working with the artist) to adjust necessarily the subtle tones, contrasts, and shifting color balances that make the final print virtually indestinguishable from the original. Today giclees are on display in the world's finest museums and art galleries, including the likes of the Metropolitan and the Museum of Modern Art in New York city. The fidelity of this new medium in the art world is so complete that recently at auction, a print of Annie Leibovitz fetched $10,800, for a Chuck Close $9,600, and $22,800 for a Wolfgang Tillman.
