The Ibanez Portamento fretless bass is a stunning example why Ibanez has been a leader in the electric bass world for decades. The heart of this neck-thru wonder is the beautiful 5-piece maple and bubinga neck which is capped with a rosewood fingerboard that stretches to a full 30-fret range. This extended range allows for playing in the upper register usually reserved for uprights. The body wings are mahogany for superb tone, and they are carved to a radius for a extremely comfortable and sleek SR body. The tone is the epitome of fretless: greasy and smooth with fuzzy warmth and just the right amount of buzz. This perfectly fretless tone is captured by a combination of pickups. The magnetics are Bartolini MK-1 Pickups with a split coil design that provides a very wide frequency range and enhanced definition for maximum accuracy. The neck and bridge pickups have equal response, like traditional single coils, but without the inherent noise. In addition to the Bartolinis, the Portamento also has the exclusive AeroSilk Piezo system with active tone control. The EQ section incorporates the controls of the Bartolini pickups with the AeroSilk system. On the back of the Portamento are recessed controls assigned to each individual string to control the volume of the AeroSilk pickup and provide perfect string balance. The bridge of the SRF-700 was created specifically for the optimum performance of the AeroSilk Piezo pickup system. Unique plastic saddles were designed to work in concert with the piezo pickup and enhance the acoustic quality of the sound.
