Martin de Porres Velázquez, O.P. (December 9, 1579 – November 3, 1639), was a lay brother of the Dominican Order who was beatified in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI and canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. He is the patron saint of mixed-race people and all those seeking interracial harmony.

He was noted for work on behalf of the poor, establishing an orphanage and a children's hospital. He maintained an austere lifestyle, which included fasting and abstaining from meat. Among the many miracles attributed to him were those of levitation, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and an ability to communicate with animals.

Early life

Juan Martin de Porres Velázquez was born in the city of Lima, in the Viceroyalty of Peru, on December 9, 1579. He was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman, Don Juan de Porres, and Ana Velázquez, a freed slave from Panama, of African or possibly part Native American descent.[1][2] He had a sister named Juana, born two years later in 1581. After the birth of his sister, the father abandoned the family.[3] Ana Velázquez supported her children by taking in laundry.[4] He grew up in poverty and, when his mother could not support him, Martin was confided to a primary school for two years, and then placed with a barber/surgeon to learn the medical arts.[2] He spent hours of the night in prayer, a practice which increased as he grew older.

By law in Peru, descendants of Africans and Indians were barred from becoming full members of religious orders. The only route open to Martin was to ask the Dominicans of Holy Rosary Priory in Lima to accept him as a donado, a volunteer who performed menial tasks in the monastery in return for the privilege of wearing the habit and living with the religious community.[5] At the age of 15 he asked for admission to the Dominican Convent of the Rosary in Lima and was received first as a servant boy, and as his duties grew he was promoted to almoner.

Martin continued to practice his old trades of barbering and healing and performed many, many miraculous cures. He also took on kitchen work, laundry, and cleaning.[4] After eight years at Holy Rosary, the prior Juan de Lorenzana, decided to turn a blind eye to the law and permit Martin to take his vows as a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. Holy Rosary was home to 300 men, not all of whom were as open-minded as De Lorenzana; one of the novices called Martin a “mulatto dog,” while one of the priests mocked him for being illegitimate and descended from slaves.[5]

When Martin was 24, he was allowed to profess religious vows as a Dominican lay brother in 1603. He is said to have several times refused this elevation in status, which may have come about due to his father's intervention, and he never became a priest.[1] It is said that when his convent was in debt, he implored them: "I am only a poor mulatto, sell me." Martin was deeply attached to the Blessed Sacrament, and he was praying in front of it one night when the step of the altar he was kneeling on caught fire. Throughout all the confusion and chaos that followed, he remained where he was, unaware of what was happening around him.[6]

When Martin was 34, after he had been given the religious habit of a lay brother, he was assigned to the infirmary, where he was placed in charge and would remain in service until his death at the age of 59. He was known for his care of the sick.[2] His superiors saw in him the virtues necessary to exercise unfailing patience in this difficult role. It was not long before miracles were attributed to him. Martin also cared for the sick outside his convent, often bringing them healing with only a simple glass of water. He ministered without distinction to Spanish nobles and to slaves recently brought from Africa.[1] One day an aged beggar, covered with ulcers and almost naked, stretched out his hand, and Martin took him to his own bed. One of his brethren reproved him. Martin replied: “Compassion, my dear Brother, is preferable to cleanliness."

When an epidemic struck Lima, there were in this single Convent of the Rosary 60 friars who were sick, many of them novices in a distant and locked section of the convent, separated from the professed. Martin is said to have passed through the locked doors to care for them, a phenomenon which was reported in the residence more than once. The professed, too, saw him suddenly beside them without the doors having been opened. Martin continued to transport the sick to the convent until the provincial superior, alarmed by the contagion threatening the friars, forbade him to continue to do so. His sister, who lived in the country, offered her house to lodge those whom the residence of the religious could not hold. One day he found on the street a poor Indian, bleeding to death from a dagger wound, and took him to his own room until he could transport him to his sister’s hospice. The prior, when he heard of this, reprimanded him for disobedience. He was extremely edified, however, by his reply: "Forgive my error, and please instruct me, for I did not know that the precept of obedience took precedence over that of charity."[7] The prior gave him liberty thereafter to follow his inspirations in the exercise of mercy.

Martin did not eat meat. He begged for alms to procure necessities the convent could not provide.[7] In normal times, Martin succeeded with his alms to feed 160 poor persons every day, and distributed a remarkable sum of money every week to the indigent. Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen, laundry and infirmary, Martin’s life is said to have reflected extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures and a remarkable rapport with animals.[3] He founded a residence for orphans and abandoned children in the city of Lima.[3]

Death and commemoration

Martin was a friend of both St. Juan Macías, a fellow Dominican lay brother, and St. Rose of Lima, a lay Dominican. By the time he died, on November 3, 1639, he had won the affection and respect of many of his fellow Dominicans as well as a host of people outside the priory.[5] Word of his miracles had made him known as a saint throughout the region. As his body was displayed to allow the people of the city to pay their respects, each person snipped a tiny piece of his habit to keep as a relic. It is said that three habits were taken from the body. His body was then interred in the grounds of the monastery.

After De Porres died, the miracles and graces received when he was invoked multiplied in such profusion that his body was exhumed after 25 years and said to be found intact, and exhaling a fine fragrance. Letters to Rome pleaded for his beatification; the decree affirming the heroism of his virtues was issued in 1763 by Pope Clement XIII.

Pope Gregory XVI beatified Martin de Porres on October 29, 1837, and nearly 125 years later, Pope Saint John XXIII canonized him in Rome on May 6, 1962. He is the patron saint of people of mixed race, and of innkeepers, barbers, public health workers and more, with a feast day on November 3.

Martin is also commemorated in the Calendar of Saints of the Church of England on November 3.

He is recognised as Papa Candelo in the Afro-Caribbean-Catholic syncretist religion of Santería, which is practised in places where African diaspora culture thrives such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, the United States, and his native Peru.

Iconography

Martin de Porres is often depicted as a young mulatto friar wearing the old habit of the Dominican lay brother, a black scapular and capuce, along with a broom, since he considered all work to be sacred no matter how menial. He is sometimes shown with a dog, a cat and a mouse eating in peace from the same dish.

Legacy

Martin's sometimes defiant attachment to the ideal of social justice achieved deep resonance in a church attempting to carry forward that ideal in today's modern world.[1]

Today, Martin is commemorated by, among other things, a school building that houses the medical, nursing, and rehabilitation science schools of the Dominican University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines. A programme of work is also named after him at the Las Casas Institute at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford.[8] He is also the titular saint of the parish of St. Martin de Porres in Poughkeepsie, NY,[9] St. Martin de Porres Marianist elementary school in Uniondale, NY, and St. Martin de Porres Catholic elementary school in Scarborough, ON, Canada. A number of Catholic churches are named after him.

In popular culture

In the 1980 novel A Confederacy of Dunces, Ignatius Reilly contemplates praying to Martin for aid in bringing social justice to the black workers at the New Orleans factory where he works. In music, the first track of jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams's album Black Christ of the Andes is titled "St. Martin De Porres."[10]

There are several Spanish and Mexican works regarding his life in cinema and television, starring Cuban actor Rene Muñoz, the most of them referring to his mulatto origin, his miracles and his life of humilty. The most known movies are Fray Escoba (Friar Broom) (1963)[11] and Un mulato llamado Martin (A mulatto called Martin) (1975).[12]

In the Moone Boy episode "Godfellas", the character Martin Moon is shown to be named by his grandfather after San Martin De Porres. Humorously, his grandfather is unable to actually remember any of San Martin's accomplishments, and simply refers to him as "One of the black ones" when asked about him.

Thoughts of Preparing yourself for Lent Season....

Easter / Lent is a very important personal Journey each year in my own personal life. It is almost like my own personal "renewal" and or " rebirth" of the imprint of my spirit. It does not mean I can swipe the slate clean and go without repentance of my own sins prior. I once thought about taking Holy Orders and is why I think I have attacked such wonderful Religious Possessions to me. I am not saying I think there is ONE WAY to pray. I also think there are endless definitions of even the existence of God. How we get to our own inner spirit is as diverse are there are stars in the sky. So as I place my own personal Rosaries up I am not trying to promote my own personal agenda. But I have been asked about how and even why pray the Rosary. As I end my ramblings now I leave you with this something that I read this once and found it very much how the path feels for me and written is words I could not find myself and so I share. After that you will find the HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY.

As we pray and ponder the mystery of Jesus passion, death and resurrection let us ask God to create a new heart in our lives and societies, so that we may turn away from the ashes of destruction and begin to embrace more fully the new life given us by Christ.

Jesus is our model because Jesus throughout manifests full, complete and active adherence to the will of him who sent him. His passion glorifies the Father because it forcefully reveals the power of his love that saves the whole of human kind.

Every journey begins with a single step. To take that step one must have the desire to make the journey. Every journey is a voyage of discovery. Sometimes the terrain traveled is familiar, sometimes the terrain is seen for the first time; whatever the case, the Sacred journey is a journey intended to enhance our relationship with God and meet the Risen Christ in a new way.

Biblically, the first person to undertake a personal journey of faith and discovery is Abraham and his wife Sarah. "Now the Lord said to Abram (Abraham) 'Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.'" (Genesis 12:1) Two things are implied in this invitation: A journey into the unknown based on trust and faith and a personal journey of discovery of this God who offers the invitation and promise of blessing.

In spirituality the desert or wilderness is symbolic of the struggle to obey, heed, and listen to the voice of God who calls and issues the invitation. It is often tortuous, twisting, challenging involving purging, purifying, cleansing so that one's personal self can experience transformation through the process of dying to the old self and rising to new life, a life of total trust and intimacy with the One Who Calls.

A we touch upon key moments in the life of Jesus' journey we will try to make applications to our own journey of faith.

HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY

Prayers of the Rosary

Prayer Before The Rosary

Queen of the Holy Rosary, you have designed to come to Fatima and Medjugorje, to reveal to the three shepherd children and six visionaries, the treasures of grace hidden in the Rosary. Inspire my heart with a sincere love of this devotion, in order that by meditating on the Mysteries of our Redemption which are recalled in it, I may obtain peace for the world, the conversion of sinners, and the favor which I ask of you in this Rosary (Mention your request). I ask it for the greater glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good of souls, especially for my own. Amen.

The Our Father:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Prayer to Jesus Requested By Our Lady

O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, take all souls to Heaven, and help especially those most in need of Your mercy.

The Apostles' Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen:

Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer After The Rosary

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that, meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Rosary Novenas

Religious devotion, public or private, for the duration of nine days to gain special graces, is called a Novena. Those who perform it with a lively hope of having their request granted, and with perfect faith and resignation if it be refused, may be assured that Christ will grant some grace or blessing. This requires an understanding that in His infinite wisdom and mercy, He may refuse the particular favor which is requested.

Novenas originated in imitation of the Apostles who were gathered together in prayer for nine days from the time of Our Lord's Ascension (to Heaven) until Pentecost Sunday (the descent of the Holy Spirit).

This practice of saying the Rosary nine times in the form of the Rosary Novena in petition or thanksgiving, is another way of heeding Our Lady's request to Pray the Rosary.

The 54 Day Novena Devotion which originated in 1884 at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompei, consists of the daily recitation of five decades of the Rosary (one complete Mystery: Joyful, Sorrowful, or Glorious) for twenty-seven days in petition and five decades for twenty-seven additional days in thanksgiving. You will actually be making three Novenas in petition for a particular favor and three Novenas in thanksgiving for a particular favor.

1st day say the 5 Joyful Mysteries
2nd day say the 5 Luminous Mysteries
3rd day say the 5 Sorrowful Mysteries
4th day say the 5 Glorious Mysteries
5th day begin again the 5 Joyful Mysteries, etc.

The Family Rosary

The Family That Prays Together... Stays Together.

The family Rosary is the Rosary recited aloud together, by as many of the family and their friends as can be present. Any family (two or more people) may say the Family Rosary in any suitable place and at any time.

A leader says aloud the first part of each prayer; a second person or group of persons answers aloud the second part of the prayer.

To begin the Family Rosary, all hold the Crucifix of their Rosary in the right hand and make the Sign of the Cross.

The leader begins the Apostles' Creed and proceeds through the rest of the Rosary as shown on Page 2. The leader announces the Mystery before each decade. Five decades (one complete Mystery: Joyful, Sorrowful, or Glorious) should be recited each day.
The Five First Saturdays

Mary's Great Promise at Fatima -

The Five First Saturdays are intended to honor and to make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for all the blasphemes and ingratitude of men.

This devotion and the wonderful promises connected with it were revealed by the Blessed Virgin at Fatima, a small village in Portugal. Our lady appeared to three children there in 1917, and one of the little girls, Lucy, tells us that Our Lady said:

I promise to help at the hour of death, with the graces needed for salvation, whoever on the First Saturday of five consecutive months shall:

1. Confess and Receive Communion.

2. Recite five decades of the Rosary (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, or Glorious Mysteries)

3. Keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.

This Week and for the next few months I am going to put a few of my very special Rosaries from two Estates. One Estate is from an older Priest whom has passed away now about 15 years. These Rosaries from his Estate and are mostly from the 1940s. The other is a Nun's Estate whom has passed now 20 years ago. These Rosaries are from the 1940s and even before. I am not expert in Rosaries. But I have been told and the evidence shows many of these items are even turn of the century. The Value of these Rosaries have never been monetary. ALL these Rosaries are blessed in some way or another with uniqueness. Each has a story to tell in the devotion that was given them. And through each Rosary many prayers were said by these very devote and peaceful souls. The Rosaries are ALL precious to me and I must now part with them. Please know my only wish now is to find each and everyone of them a good and cherished home. Every one of the Rosaries are "Sold As Is". They are very old and need care. I have not cleaned them for my own personal reasons. I believe each and every living thing or otherwise in life has an energy. These Rosaries are no exception to such a feeling of peaceful energy. Thus I have let them remain "as they were" when I received them. I have done my best to detail them in my pictures. I will answer any questions I can about them. But know I am not a Religious expert nor do I know everything there is to know about Rosaries. I have just been a blessed one whom the Rosaries came to after the passing of their owners. Thank you so much for coming to my auctions today and know I am truly blessed and humbled you did come and take a look at these treasures. If you know anyone whom would LOVE a Rosary please either bid on these Rosaries I have up... or contact me and I will look through all my Rosaries for the type of Rosary you might be looking for. Have a wonderful and beautiful day and may you always have LOVE in your life as I have found.. in the peace from above..... becca

ABOUT ME...

People ask me often about why I see a few items on Ebay. So I thought I would give a better understanding about myself. I am a person whom has been blessed most of my life and been in the right place at the right time to meet the people I have been so fortunate to have come to meet paths with. In doing so, I have also been blessed with items now I would wish to find loving home for. Most of the my things I have either given away, donated of yes, lost because of circumstances. I have come to realize in my life I needed a new direction. So, my husband and myself are stripping our belonging down to a very bare minimum and saving the little we do get on Ebay to help our "later years". I would wish the items I put up on Ebay to find good homes. I still have this need to "rescue" religious items mainly and give them a home that people will cherish as much as I have over the years. I still have people coming to me and offering me these treasures knowing that I would seek out a good home for them. Crazy I know, but this is really what it is for me. Prices are pretty much FIXED though on Ebay. Either I am selling for someone else, or I feel that the price for the items I have up are low enough. I will be changing things up from time to time and selling a vast variety of items. I am not an expert at anything I am putting up. So all the items are "SOLD AS IS". I do my best to describe the item and all it's flaws. I also am getting better at taking pictures and will post as much detail with each item I can. I would be very grateful if you would leave me positive feedback when the transaction is done. I will do the same in return. As for the types of item I will be putting up... who knows? Truth is I live in the country in North Carolina now. And for fun my husband and I take long drives out to places most would never be able to get to. So I will pass these treasure I find too along to you as well. If you have any questions about me feel free to contact me. I would be blessed to share myself with you. As always find goodness in ALL that comes in your path. Life can and does often change on a dime. So please be gentle to yourself and those around you. May love find you always....

Sincerely grateful, becca

Come and talk to me before an auction ends.
