This is a fabulous late Georgian - early Victorian large yellow gold and engraved Carnelian pocket watch chain fob SEAL......for sealing your letters with wax in the days before postal stamps... it has everything going for it... its fabulous and LARGE too.... a right status symbol.

Especially if you are related to or your surname is
MacTAGGART-STEWART.....McTaggart - Stewart.
So the top part has beautiful yellow gold chip engraved foliage and swirls and the upside down scallop shell in the middle... typical of the period...solid work.... all coming down to the rounded corner slight rectangular seal frame....a very nice fine suspension hole too which is shaped...and chunky.
The seal is fine engraved into Carnelian gemstone.. and shows a family coat of arms.......very elaborate this one....with the garter and Latin family motto around it....
SUFFIBULATUS MAJORES SEQUOR ...which means " Being buckled...I follow my ancestors......Harnessed I follow the example of my ancestors ".
The seal fob would have hung from the very well to do Scottish 1st Baronet's gold pocket watch chain and his fusee verge pair cased pocket watch on the other end.
It is nearly 1 and a half inch tall and the seal is 7/8ths inch long x 3/4 inch wide......it weighs approx...19.5grams.

As you will have seen this family seal belongs to Sir Mark John MacTaggart - Stewart - 1st Baronet of Southwick & Blairderry.

Please Note.
My price has NOTHING to do with the metal content of the fob seal..it is to do with the age, style, size of the item and the FAMILY CREST.
