Up
for auction is a rare Orient LCD chronograph watch with a set of tiny solar cells
to assist the watches battery life.
These were produced in limited numbers in 1978 / 1979 by the Orient Watch company of Japan - a brand owned by Seiko since 1977 which explains the similarity of module design from then on.
The solar cells supplement the micro power supplied by a standard button battery, not that this makes much difference these days !
The solar cells are working fine on their own, and are capable of powering the watch without the battery in daylight (I tested it ..)
It has simple features
including time, chronograph, day/date and a working back light.
It’s in superb
condition with tags on it and looks like it’s never been worn.
It weights approx 75g.
The strap is full size catering for at least 8+ inch wrist with no links
missing.
There is a website
dedicated to nothing other than the history of solar digital watches at :-

.. and a
variation to this Orient watch design
can be seen here :-
