    Holland, MI

The benchmark for Doug and Heather Petter’s summer is on the horizon.
It will be a historic sailing trip on Lake Michigan this weekend.
The Chicago Yacht Club’s 100th Race to Mackinac begins Saturday, and the Petters will join a record-setting field for the longest annual freshwater sailing distance race in the world.
    MORE ON THE RACE
Folklore adds to the challenge of the Chicago to Mackinac Race, skipper Doug Petter said. Read more at blogs.hollandsentinel.com/alan.
They will leave from Chicago’s Navy Pier and travel 289.4 nautical miles to Mackinac Island. They could reach the finish line as early as Sunday or as late as Tuesday.
“It has a long heritage,” Doug Petter, a 42-year-old from Holland who owns an industrial filtration company, said of the Chicago to Mackinac race. “It will have crews from all over the country and the world. You’ll hear New Zealand accents. There was a Russian team a couple of years ago.
“There is a lot of prestige that goes along with it. It makes it a lot of fun.”
The Petters’ boat, the 43-foot-long Willie J, is one of 15 with ties to Holland entered in the race. They belong to Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, which has 13 members participating. Bayshore Yacht Club of Holland has two members in the field.
It’s a full field, with more than 450 boats from across the country expected to sail after receiving an invitation from the Chicago Yacht Club.
The event has come a long way since the first race in 1898 that featured just five boats.
The second Chicago to Mackinac race didn’t happen until 1904 and then intermittently until after World War I. The race has been held every year since 1921.
“The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac is a classic in its own right,” said Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. “The longevity of this event means the Mac is an enduring tradition with a rich and colorful history.”
The Petters are sailing in the race for the ninth time since 1999. Their crew will include 10 others, including 14-year-old Alexis Petter and 11-year-old Andrew Petter, Doug and Heather’s children.
Longtime friends Dell and Amy Todd of Grand Rapids also will join the Petters on deck.
There is a lot to enjoy during the race, Amy said.
“Sailing over three days, you have multiple winds, different scenery and different wind patterns. It’s really a challenge,” she said. “It’s a beautiful experience. It’s fun seeing Mackinac come into view. You know your family and friends are there.”
The fleet, which is handicapped to level the field, features different divisions.
Money doesn’t motivate sailors. No prize money is awarded in this amateur event.
Page 2 of 2 - Section winners will receive a plaque, a flag, and bragging rights for the next year.
Overall winners have their names engraved on the permanent trophies that are displayed at Chicago Yacht Club.
It is the challenge of sailing from Chicago to Mackinac in as little of time as possible that lures sailors like Doug Petter.
“Preparation is infinite,” Petter said. “You can prepare as much as you want. I’ve been preparing for weeks practically every day. It all comes down to the little details.
“You have to make sure you don’t just have a flashlight, you have to have the right flashlight. You don’t just have to know where exactly the equipment is and how to use, it has to be 12 people knowing where that snatch block is or where that piece of line is.
“Nobody has an easy time doing well.”
