Hardiness: The Otaheite Gooseberry is tropical or subtropical and can take  several degrees of frost for brief periods of time.

Growing Environment: The trees  generally prefer moist soil. There are often two fruiting cycles per year  and depending on the climate, trees may produce off and on throughout the  year.

Propagation: By seed, which may bear in 4 years, or by budding, greenwood  cuttings, and air-layering.

Uses: Often the fruit is cooked with  sugar, upon which the pulp and juice turns bright red. Common uses for the  resulting fruit mixture are to prepare beverages or use as a sauce.

 This is a curious and  ornamental shrub or tree, 6 to 40 ft high, with spreading, dense, bushy  crown of thick, rough, main branches, in general aspect resembling the  Bilimbi.
This tropical tree, which has obvious ornamental features, can withstand  very slight frosts of about 30°F (-1°C), provided the growing season is  warm and long. This fruit has several ribs and is about 1-2 in (1.25-2.5  cm) wide. It has a white-yellow flesh, and has a waxy aspect. The flesh  is juicy and very acidic. The Tahitian gooseberry is thus seldom eaten  fresh, but is rather eaten cooked or is preserved. It can also be  transformed into various sauces, juices, sirups and other beverages.  This tree bears numerous small and pink flowers, which are grouped in  clusters.

Male and female flowers are borne on the same tree. The  flowers can be male, female or hermaphrodite. They are small and pinkish and  appear in clusters in 5-to-12.5-cm long panicles. Flowers are formed at  leafless parts of the main branches, at the upper part of the tree. The  fruits are numerous, oblate, with 6 to 8 ribs, develop so densely that they  actually form spectacular masses. They are pale yellow or white, waxy, crisp  and juicy, and very sour. It has only one seed in each fruit.

Small white to slightly yellow colored fruit borne in great abundance,  with a crunchy, juicy, acidic flavored pulp.
This tree grows on a wide range of soils but prefers rather moist sites.

 

      The fruit is called "Grosella" in  Puerto Rico and Colombia. Since the fruit is tart, it is often eaten in "Dulce  de Grosellas". The preparation of this dessert consist in simmering the  berries with sugar until they are soft and turn red in color. The liquid  from the cooking is also used as a beverage. In Colombia it is also most  commonly eaten raw with salt.

        The juice can be used in beverage, or  the fruit pickled in sugar. When cooked with plenty of sugar, the fruit  turns ruby red and produces a kind of jelly, which is called mứt chùm ruột  in Vietnamese. It can also be salted.

        The  Otaheite gooseberry prefers moist soil. Although it usually grows from  seeds, the tree can also be multiplied from budding, greenwood cuttings or  air-layers. It bears two crops per year in South India: one in April-May and  the other in August-September. Elsewhere, it is mainly harvested in January.  this tree is occasionally found as a curiosity, for instance, it is  resistant enough to fruit in Tampa. Seedlings will produce a substantial  crop in 4 years. No fruit is borne in greater abundance than the crisp,  sour, pale-yellow Otaheite gooseberry.

     Tahitian gooseberry is a small tropical tree with ovate pointed leaves that  grows up to 50 feet tall. Tahitian gooseberry bears fruit in abundance on  the branches.
It has reddish flowers and pale-yellow waxy fruit, 3/4 - 1" thick and is 6-8  ridged; in the center is a hard stone containing 4-6 seeds. The yellow fruit  of the Tahitian gooseberry is edible and tastes sour; it is one of the few  members of the Euphorbiaceae family that has edible fruit.
The tart flesh is used as a flavoring or made into jelly in Suriname.

            This plant is a  deciduous tree. It  prefers a sunny location and regular watering. It bears green fruit (yellow  flesh) after the red flowers are finished blooming. The fruit is the size of  a concord grape. The fruit is actually edible, but somewhat tart. It can be  made into jelly.

We ship  via USPS Mondays-Wednesday with Delivery confirmation.

            All plant materials are  required by LAW to inspected and certified by USDA prior to  export Hawaii to the US Mainland.

After Inspection, USDA stamps released for  export Hawaii to the US Mainland. All items are delivered to  USDA Inspection Station at Honolulu International airport.

USDA  Certification charge  is included in Shipping and Handling @ $5 fee per item/species.

There  is a packing and custom boxing fee.

Combined  Discounts Won Auctions

For 2-3 winning auctions, the combined discount is 10% of the total Shipping and Handling charges.

For 4-7 winning auctions, the combined discount is 20% of the total Shipping and Handling charges.

As  each order is packed and prepared separately you will pay the quoted S/H charges individually per item. If you buy the same species in that item it  does calculate out the discount (i.e.: additional items)

My stores' combined shipping is built in for same items rather than a varied  selection. Domestic S/H includes postage, USDA certification and inspection, proper packing and delivery to Airport for  prompt delivery. I can't really change any of these. If you want one of this and one of that, it is hard to discount  much as each different species requires it's own prep, packing, then at USDA each has to be unwrapped and inspected  then repacked. USDA requires me to clean and prepare every last piece before we drive them to the Inspection Station on  the other side of the island. It takes my wife and I, 2-3 days to pack items and get ready to ship. The whole next day  we drive around the island and get inspected (2-3 hours), then drive to the Airport Post Office to drop off. It takes  the same work with the same type item if you can understand.

There is the risk when you grow plants that they may die.  LIVE PLANTS are PERISHABLE, guaranteed not to live forever.

When you order a plant we assume you are prepared to care for it. It is your responsibility to know how to care  for the plant. Do some research before they arrive or seek experienced help.

 Small plants need protection from many things, wind, sun, dry-out. They do well just in the garage or living  room. They need good light but not sunlight (full sun will burn small plants). Small pots dry-out easily. Just sitting in a shallow tray of water works  well. The idea is to keep the plants from dehydrating.

Be careful if you decide to re-pot.  Re-potting voids any warranty. Plants are easily damaged with new/different mix. Use NO fertilizers (this may kill your plants).  Proper care is critical upon arrival. Live Plants are NOT GUARANTEED  to survive under your care. DO NOT expect any live plant to be GUARANTEED to remain alive. Plants are NOT GUARANTEED TO SURVIVE after you begin Care! Live arrival is guaranteed,  eternal survival is up to you.

 IF YOU are NOT able to provide PROPER CARE, PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT plant to be GUARANTEED after it perishes.

NO REPLACEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED IF YOU HAVE REPOTTED THE PLANT.

Please Do NOT email me a week after potting your plant, and make a claim it arrived damaged. If you repot your plant after delivery, all warranties are voided and no replacement is offered. All  photos must be as arrived in original condition as received (in the box and packed as delivered).

If repotted, you are responsible for the condition of the plant. NO REPLACEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED IF YOU HAVE REPOTTED THE PLANT.

Not every plant that I grow survives, and I am aware of that and accept the risk when I order. This is the risk that you as the buyer accept, because there is no way to know what kind  of conditions it will endure in the trip to your door. My responsibility ends when a live plant is delivered to your door.
