DCVW is pleased to offer a wonderfully
simplistic all-original late 1965 Seiko 6601-1990 "Sportsmatic"
automatic watch, presented
on a Clockwork Synergy nylon over/under strap, which keeps accurate time for a
vintage watch. One of the major draws of Seiko’s Sportsmatic line is
the amazingly simplistic dial and the figurative “elephant tusks” hands – the same hand set
that used on the famed Seiko 62MAS. All these combine to form its single
greatest aesthetic quality – symmetry. The nearly invisible hidden crown
coupled with the sparse dial give it a simple, clean symmetrical style hard to
find in a watch of any era or price range. They are simple designs
when looking at the hour and minutes but actually contain edge chamfers to
create some of the small details that make this a great watch. The sweep
seconds hand features the well-known lumed box near the end of the hand. In
summary, everything is in balance.
Per Fratellos’s review
of the Sportsmatic, here, “… one of the most affordable #TBT pieces we’ve
covered to date. I can’t overstate it enough that if you’re even half
considering a Seiko Sportsmatic, grab one and you’ll be happy that something so
inexpensive can be so nice. It’s a versatile watch that turns heads.
Every time I post this watch on Instagram, I get loads of requests about
the detail behind it…If you’re not a vintage watch person, but are simply
reading our site and want a classically styled legitimate timepiece, this is
your invitation to stop shopping for watches in the J.Crew catalog – this Seiko
is far better than a pricey NATO-clad Timex.”
Indeed, as recently stated in
Hodinkee article, “Ten
Vintage Watches That Should Be More Expensive Than They Are, And Why” –
“In this list, we’ll take you through ten watches that we think should be
selling for more money than they are, and we’ll tell you why...What is there to
say about vintage Seiko besides great watches for the money? Seiko has been making mechanical watches since
1913 – with a host of cool designs and interesting, even high-beat movements…If you're looking for a nice old watch, any vintage mechanical
Seiko will do.” DC
Vintage Watches is happy to offer this Sportsmatic as another example of the
fine workmanship and innovation that continues the Seiko tradition.
As our name
indicates, DC Vintage greatly respects classic manual movement timepieces -
usually originating from the vintage or retro era spanning from the 1950's to
1990's - for the care taken during this period by Swiss, American, and Japanese
companies to ensure owner’s of these timepieces had a keepsake worthy of
lasting decades (and most likely longer) - all at an affordable
price. We aim to bring these beautiful and interesting watches, the
type people will undoubtedly notice on your wrist,
to auction winners every week! You won't find anything
lackluster here at DC Vintage Watches - just our unique selection of vintage
and retro wristwatches!
DCVW has shunned quartz since our inception in 2012, and will continue to solely auction quality manual movements, with an eye to outstanding workmanship!
DIAL: Brilliant original
sparse silver dial, with a subtly depressed outer track ring that provides
depth to the overall appearance of the watch dial. Dial is signed “Seiko
Sportsmatic,” replete with the Sportmatic logo just below the 12 o’clock position. Original dauphin hands. Slight mark above the 9 o’clock position.
CASE: Original 37mm x 43.5mm
case in pre-loved condition. Matching original signed snap-on caseback.
CRYSTAL: Original flawless
domed crystal.
BAND: New green, white,
and blue nylon Clockwork Synergy North Atlantic Treaty
Organization over/under strap with stainless steel hardware. This strap
provides a nice color pop to the simplicity of the dial. Clockwork
Synergy is an established quality strap company, local to DCVW; their
website can be found, here.
You may wonder why we did not call this strap by its more popularly known
acronym? A certain, ahem, “gentleman” has now trademarked the term,
see here.
MOVEMENT: Original 17-jewel
Seiko 6601 automatic movement, manufactured in October 1975. The
autowind mechanism is quite efficient owing to Seiko’s ingenious “Magic Lever”
which allows the rotor to wind the mainspring in both directions.
CROWN: Nearly invisible original unsigned stainless steel crown.
