Fine Victorian 9ct Serpent Motif Memorial Brooch c1860
With Glazed Locket Back & Hairwork Panel

A fine example of a Victorian 9ct Gold Oval Locket Back Mourning/Memorial Brooch dating to c1860, which is decorated with four coiled serpents or snakes (please see the detailed close-up photographs provided, which form an integral part of the item's description).

This wonderful hand made antique Gold Brooch is of oval form with a glazed panel complete with its original plaited hairwork panel and a vacant locket back to the reverse, as shown. Typical of the period the Brooch is unmarked, but it has been tested and is guaranteed to be made from solid Gold testing as at least 9ct.

The Brooch is beautifully decorated four beautifully crafted coiled serpents and measures approx' 4.9cms long by approx' 4.4cms wide and  it weighs 17.8 grams.

Overall the Brooch is in great condition, as shown; commensurate with age it is fitted with a long steel pin, which may be a historic replacement and there may have been a repair to the hinge. It would appear to have '15ct' stamped on the reverse, which may have been an attempt by a Victorian Jeweller to meet the Victoriand demand for 15ct jewellery by passing it off as a 15ct Brooch.

In summary, a rare and beautiful Victorian 9ct Gold Oval Locket Back Memorial Brooch dating to c1860, which is decorated with four coiled serpents or snakes - quite simply sublime.
