There's something about Nikon equipment, you pick it up and you're instantly aware of the seminal images of our lifetime,captured by this wonderful, cherished equipment. Never is this more apparent than when looking at a Pro level period piece of kit such as this.
A Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4 macro lens, the most extreme non medical Macro lens that Nikon have ever offered. a very high quality and wincingly expensive elite product, with just 40,000 produced from 1978 to 2005, The serial number dates this particular one to around 1982. Contemporary to the seminal Nikon FM and FM2 SLR bodies, being AI means that it will also work with current Nikon DSLRs. Every time one of these phenomenal lenses crosses my path I have a play with it and have to stop myself before I fall in love, this is a seriously, seriously capable piece of kit, weighing just 740 grams, it is nicely manoeuvrable and thanks to the revolutionary internal focusing system, balances well on a Nikon DSLR. while the removable tripod collar enables a balanced footing on your tripod and allows you to switch instantly from landscape to portrait.
The 200mm Micro Nikkor is a legend among Nikon fanatics, superbly balanced and capable of amazingly high resolution results on any Nikon SLR or DSLR. This lens allows you to keep your distance from the subject, allowing much better illumination of the subject, as well as a much more natural perspective than a shorter lens is capable of, eliminating distortion. These traits make it particularly suitable for anyone working with live subjects, especially insects or snakes, or who simply prefers room to work.
This magical lens is the solution for anyone wishing to improve the macro images they bring back from the field. As with the smaller Micro Nikkors, the 200mm has a true all round ability, offering equally superb performance at medium distance and the telephoto end as well, this is perhaps the ultimate lens for many different types of photography.
This particular example is in excellent condition, having obviously been carefully looked after. The optics are sparkling and clear, reflecting a lovely tint, with just a tiny bit of dust visible internally. As you can see in the pictures, with both barrel and grip maintain an excellent finish, with just a few marks to give away the passage of the past 34 years. The tripod bush is only lightly marked, another indicator of very little use. Both aperture ring and that superb free floating focus ring operate smoothly, the focus ring particularly seems to float on air and focus can be a achieved with a single finger.
The images this lens produces are nothing short of staggering, which should not surprise anyone, adjusted for inflation, the average price asked for this lens when new was around the £2000 mark in todays money and Nikon averaged just 2000 sales per year worldwide, this lens is so sought after for very good reason.

These are just a few test shots with another Micro Nikkor 200/4, shot around the house and garden. Typically, the light was awful, but they should give you an idea of the awesome detail that this incredible lens can achieve. The lens was mounted on my dear departed D300, shooting distance was between three and six feet. Some shot on tripod, some hand held.
