The watch was designed by Marc Chatila, fromer CEO of Montega.
A deal Ronaldo made with Montega Watches, worth around £2.7 Million over
three years from 1999 to 2001, resulted in the creation of the R9, a
line of watches costing between £2,000 and £20,000 each, taking
Ronaldo's initial and his shirt number. There were 199 in platinum,
1,999 in gold and 19,999 in steel.
Sadly, Ronaldo suffered a serious knee injury shortly after signing the
contract, and his fame plummeted. He only returned to football in 2002,
after the end of the contract.
As a result, Montega Geneve was left with thousands of the watches
unsold and refused to pay Ronaldo any more than the 2 Million GBP it had
already invested. Lawyers for the company insisted that there had been
an injury clause to break the contract. They also alleged that Ronaldo
knew he had knee problems before signing.
After a lengthy court battle, Montega Geneve declared bankruptcy, and
while the court eventually found in Ronaldo's favour, he did not receive
any of the money, or damages.

Some of Dubois-Depraz's largest clients are major brands in the Swatch
and Richemont Group - as well as Rolex. Yes, even Rolex relies on
Dubois-Depraz for at least a few important parts in some of their
movements. Brands I know they work with include Breitling, Omega,
Jaeger-LeCoultre, Rolex, Patek-Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille,
and a lot others. For example the chronograph part of the movements in
many Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshores are produced here at
Dubois-Depraz. It might be surprising, even thought-provoking to learn
that proud and important brands such of these rely on external suppliers
for parts and expertise. That is one way of looking at it, especially
given how much brands like to talk themselves up in terms of their
technical achievements. Another way of looking at it is to simply
understand the nature of "Swiss Made."
