The M9 is a multi-purpose military knife system officially adopted in 1986 by the United States. It has a 7-inch (18 cm) blade and is issued with a sheath designed to double as a wire cutter.  The M9 multipurpose knife system is used as:

-A carbine attachable knife

-An edged melee weapon

-A general field and utility knife

-A wire cutter when used on the sheath

-A wood saw

The M9 also can be used with the Mossberg special purpose 590.

Some additional key specs for the M9 are:

-It is designed to pass a drop test from a height of 5 feet onto its point into a concrete floor such that that the point of the knife will not bend or chip

-It is designed to withstand a dead lift of 400 lb without snapping

-It is designed to take a deflection of ½” without breaking or taking a permanent set
