The History
This
beautiful piece was made by a very talented Native American silversmith. It
features hand crafted silversmith work throughout.
Prince
Turquoise comes out of Nevada and is known for producing high quality Variscite
Turquoise which is very hard and virtually unbreakable in jewelry. This is a
very rare type of turquoise that produces a gorgeous black, blue, green and
sometimes yellow mix of colors within the stone, this type of turquoise is
highly sought after due to its rarity and beautiful color.
Overlay pieces are made of two layers. The bottom layer is a solid sterling silver piece. The top layer has a cutout design. The cutout is placed over the bottom layer and the two pieces are “sweated” together, that is heated so that they become one. The bottom layer is usually accented. The Navajo silversmiths oxidize the bottom layer which darkens it. Hopi silversmiths oxidize and etch the background texture it with hash marks.
Hopi
Jewelry is very hard to find, more commonly Navajo and Zuni silver jewelry is
found on the open market. Hopi artist are distinctly different with beautiful
intricate stamp work and symbology mixed in their silver designs.
The Piece
The buckle includes a large hand cabochon cut piece of natural olive green and blue Prince Turquoise. The stone includes gorgeous black matrix within the stone and is set into a shadowbox type of pattern.
The buckle is made of solid Sterling Silver and includes traditional Hopi Nation silver work including silver overlay riveted patterns that go all around the buckle in the appearance of sun rays.
The buckle measures an astounding 3" by 2 and 1/4". The buckle fits up to a 1" wide belt.
