This wonderful bolo tie was designed and crafted by well known Zuni artists Ann and Porfilio Sheyka. Porfilio and Ann are known for their beautiful channel inlay work. They have been featured in several books on Zuni jewelry including "Who's Who in Zuni Jewelry" by Gordon Levy. Porfilio and Ann began working in the early 1960s and this looks to be one of their earlier pieces. It has a Bennet Pat. Pend. C-31 clasp at the back of the bolo which dates this piece to sometime between 1957 and 1967.
This delightful bolo shows a squirrel beautifully inlaid with abalone shell and highlights of turquoise and coral. The curve of the silver channel work gives wonderful dimension to the body of the squirrel. The bolo measures 1 3/4" high and 2 1/8" across. The silver tips measure 2 1/4" long. The bolo tie weighs 33.3 grams or 1.18 ounce. This bolo is signed on the back with Ann and Porfilio's P on a plate hallmark. This bolo tie is in excellent condition.
Porfilio and Ann Sheyka started working together in 1961. Ann Sheyka, who learned from her mother, does both silverwork and stonework, and Porfilio assists her. They have won multiple awards and their work is held in several museum collections.
