A beautiful, large, exquisitely carved ebony box from Ceylon, circa mid 19th century. The box has a shell shape profile with a profusely and masterfully carved lid. The interior has great details which include an unusual set of hinges in a bird form.

Measures approximately 14 3/4" wide x 9 1/2"deep x just under 4" high.

Condition is very good overall respective to the age, however, it does have several condition issues commiserate with its considerable age. One of the bird hinges is missing the tip of the wing, the other bird's wing is curled up a bit. Some of the screws have been replaced or are missing on these hinges. The lid is not closing flush, there is a sizable gap presumably this is due to some warping with age. There are a few cracks in the wood. There is a smallish chip out of the back base at the corner. A chip out of the egg and dart trim at the back edge as well as a crack at the same area. A small bit of the stain is partially worn away near the back raised edge. Most of these issues can be seen in the photos, please study the photos closely for a sense of the extent of damage.

Additionally, the bottom of this has a green felt sheet which is very moth eaten and partially unglued. There is light dust settled into the crevasses of the carving, this could benefit from a light cleaning and polish. I have tried to cover all of the condition issues but may have missed something. Please take the disclosed issues as a general indication of condition.
