Born in 1825, Horace B. Silliman was the only one of six children to survive to adulthood. He was educated at Albany Academy and graduated from Union College in 1846, a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Later, Silliman received honorary degrees from Union and Hamilton Colleges; Hamilton, at one time, offered him its presidency, but he declined.

Following graduation from Union, Horace became a druggist, opening a shop on Remsen St. in Cohoes. His interest in business was shared by his father whose local business ventures included the Simmons Axe Factory and Rathbone & Silliman, makers of iron furnaces.
Ax Factory Established By Daniel Simmons in 1825. Said to Be the First Factory in the United States to Make Axes From Cast Steel.

Description:

Up for bid we have this Simmon's & Co. of Cohoes, NY. Cast Steel Broad Axe. It measures 11 1/2" and 9 1/2" deep. It is in good shape with some pitting and light rusty area's. This is very heavy and will make a great addition to your collection. This came from my late uncle that was a career logger out in Washington and Oregon.
