The French developed the glass cloche, or bell jar, formed of a solid piece of glass shaped like a dome. The purpose was to protect an early garden plant from bleak cold and frost. This would hasten their crops to maturity.
Today cloches are still very much on the garden scene and are often used as decorative accents in the home. Uses include covering a treasured antique piece or seedlings out in the garden or even as a food cover for your next gathering. Many designer magazines even show these cloches on a table empty.
This Cloche is made of very sturdy thick, handblown glass. It has a smooth flat rim and a large round glass knob on the top that makes for easy lifting. Imperfections and tiny bubbles are characteristic of this type of glass and add to the character. Each is slightly different.
