L' arancio trifogliato (Poncirus trifoliata) è un agrume facente parte della famiglia delle Rutaceae, assieme ai generi Citrus e Fortunella. È l’unico rappresentante del genere Poncirus, per cui fino a qualche anno fa veniva semplicemente incluso tra i Citrus. In effetti se ne distingue principalmente per tre caratteristiche: diversamente da tutti gli altri agrumi, non è un sempreverde, sopporta il freddo (fino a -20 °C), e la buccia dei frutti è leggermente pelosa.

Il Poncirus è un folto arbusto o alberello che può raggiungere i 7 metri di altezza. Le foglie crescono in gruppi di tre (raramente cinque) unità, dove la foglia centrale può raggiungere i 5 cm di lunghezza, le altre due sono solitamente più piccole. All’ascella crescono delle grandi spine che alle volte possono raggiungere addirittura più di 5 cm. I fiori sono bianchi e simili ai fiori dei citrus, ma sono un po’ più grandi e leggermente meno profumati. I frutti sono verdi, tendenti al giallo, di 3-4 cm di diametro, ed hanno la buccia coperta da una leggera peluria. Di gusto molto amaro ma dotati di un gradevole profumo, sono usati per profumare armadi e cassetti per la produzione di marmellate ed alcuni liquori. Deidratati e triturati si usano come spezie.

è il migliore portainnesto per ibridi di tutti gli agrumi. Oltre a conferire alle nuove piante resistenza al freddo e alle malattie, sembra che le piante del Poncirus favoriscano raccolti più abbondanti. Va inoltre notato che le fortunelle, divenute di recente abbastanza importanti sui mercati mondiali, non fruttificano se non innestate sui poncirus. 

Altra caratteristica degna di nota è la possibilità di coltivazione ben oltre la classica fascia temperata riservata agli altri agrumi. Ecco perché il Poncirus viene spesso impiegato come pianta ornamentale, soprattutto per siepi assolutamente impenetrabili. Ultimamente è stato anche tentato il suo utilizzo tra i guard-rail autostradali. 

Esigenze pedoclimatiche

coltivare all'aperto per tutto l'arco dell'anno, poiché non teme il freddo. può capitare che gli esemplari di pochi anni temano il freddo intenso ed il vento. Esposizione pieno sole, ma resisti anche alla mezz’ombra.

Il terreno non necessita di particolari requisiti, però sarà meglio se verrà concimato o letamato (il letame dovrà essere ben maturo).

Trifoliate Orange (Poncirus trifoliata, syn. Citrus trifoliata) is a member of the family Rutaceae, closely related to Citrus, and sometimes included in that genus, being sufficiently closely related to allow it to be used as a rootstock for Citrus. It differs from Citrus in having deciduous, compound leaves, and pubescent (downy) fruit. It is native to northern China and Korea, and is also known as the Chinese Bitter Orange.

 The plant is fairly hardy (USDA zone 5) and will tolerate frost (-20°C) and snow, making a large shrub or small tree 4-8 m tall. Because of the relative hardiness of Poncirus, citrus grafted onto it are usually hardier than when grown on their own roots.

Poncirus is recognisable by the large 3-5 cm spines on the shoots, and its deciduous leaves with three (or rarely, five) leaflets, typically with the middle leaflet 3-5 cm long, and the two side leaflets 2-3 cm long. The flowers are white, with pink stamens, 3-5 cm in diameter, larger than those of true citrus but otherwise closely resembling them, except that the scent is much less pronounced than with true citrus. As with true citrus, the leaves give off a spicy smell when crushed.

 The fruits are green, ripening to yellow, and 3-4 cm in diameter, resembling a small orange, but with a finely downy surface. They are very bitter, not edible fresh, but can be made into marmalade; and when dried and powdered, they can be used as a condiment.
